Anybody load for this calibre? What do you think? How is it for bullet seating depth? I'm think for N. Ont. Moose hunting -- shots 100 to 300 yards,
Thanks. Rob

I've never loaded it, but I have a Hodgdon manual that lists it with the 30-06, both using same charges/velocities. 30-284 is supposed ot have same powder capacity, per Hodgdon. So I suppose any 30-06 data will be pretty close. I guess you could call it a short action '06.

What sort of rifle are you thinking about? I have a Savage 99CD in 30-284, rechambered from 308, and it works OK, but I don't really know if I would do it again.

I'm not familiar with that rifle. The only up-side that I see in the 30-284 is the potential gain of 100 to 200 fps of velocity. The down-side is the cost of having your rifle rechambered, the dies, the lack of factory ammo to use in a pinch, and resale value usually drops off the table.
I did mine about 20 years ago, when I was going through a "wildcat" phase and I could buy nice Savage 99CDs and Remington 722s for less than $200 a pop. Of all of the 284 based wildcats, the 3 that I like the best are the 25-284, 6.5-284, and 338-284. The 3 that I like the least are the 6-284, 30-284, and 35-284. Jeff

RobP bullet seating depth will be determined by magazine length and/or chamber throating.Any one of the 4350s or the 4831s should be greatJMHO

I've decided to hold off as I couldn't agree on a price with the seller and also thinking what was the real purpose in having a rifle for which I already have two factory cartridges which would perform just as well --- namely 308 Win and 7x57 -- without having to go through the bother of getting special dies, etc.

I think that instead of going with the 30-284, you might want to try necking a 350 Rem Mag down, and perhaps "improving" the shoulder. You'd have a tiny bit more case capasity than the 06, and you'd have a short action. Personally, I'd go with the grand old 06, because short actions are prone to feeding problems, and only offer fractions of an inch shorter rifle, and ounces lighter.

10 years back I had a 308 Remington Mohawk 600 rechambered to 30-284. With AR2201 powder and Speer 130 grain HP's I got 3000FPS+ from the original 18" barrel, a gain of 200FPS over the 308 chambering. My handloads using 150 grain Remington C/L's gave 260 FPS velocity gain, a worthwhile increase. But the Rem 600 Action is marginal for the 284 case, too short really. I [color:"blue"] [/color] now have a Tikka T-3 S/S Lite in 308 that is due to be chambered to 30-284. I like the calibre, the cases are a lot stronger than 308 brass and seem to last forever. Accuracy was excellent in the Remington.
