At one time (about 99) Green Bay had a bar for every 100 persons. Over 1000 liquor licenses (bars) in GB with 100k residents.

They put an end to giving the license and you had to buy an existing one if you wanted to open a bar. You might buy a dive for big money just to get the license and then build something else...

Maybe they figger if you can buy chips off the little rack behind the bar - that's a grocery store too?

(I know of at least 1 place that is a c-store and a bar, dunno how you score that one)

When I lived in Sunnyside, NY there was a street
that had 2 bars right next to each other.
And they were both packed.

YES!!

I should add: back in the '70s, a little burg just SE of me had about 1200 residents; but they had 14 bars within a one-mile radius... They also had the state record for beer consumption per capita... laugh laugh

I lived in Brillion until my dad passed away. My mother had always told me about that town being the same way.

That was actually in the first chapter of the book Blood Simple. They equated the ratio to bars versus number of church steeples.
