Use a 5 gal. bucket.
Sports drink bottle with a hole drillled thru the center of each end. Might need a bit of hot glue.
Lenght of arrow, with inserts in both ends.
2 8-32 screws with about a half inch of shoulder, or longer.
[Linked Image]
Make the arrow about 1/4 to 3/8s shorter than the inside of the bucket.
Drill clearance holes for the screws.
Fill with a gallon of winshield washer fluid and a piece of log for a ramp.
You will also need a scooper, I use a wire clothes hanger.
When they climb out on the bottle to get the peanut butter, the bottle rolls and dumps them.

While the trick is neat, and works very well, the plain bucket with a ring of pb spread just out of mouse reach below the rim will get them just as well. A few tidbits p high will encourage them to try deeper. I use plain water and it need only be deep enough to prevent them from jumping out...

An inch of soda left in the bottom of a can, propped up with a ramp to the top will fill overnight if there are many mice around, too.

I remember seeing plans for one similar to this one back years ago. For buildings left vacant for long periods of time, they recommended a couple of inches of powered "quick lime" instead of liquid in the bottom of the bucket to dry up the dead rodent carcass's and keep the odor down.

I have seen these around the trapper cabins in B.C.
I would say that they seem to work well, and they appeared to only use water, plus they used an aluminium can.
But would imagine you would want a liquid that would not freeze if it got cold before you got back to check on it.
They are a slick idea, I like them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

We keep one of these at camp with anti-freeze in the bottom so it doesn't freeze in the winter. It has worked well, but like each mouse ridding scheme we quickly caught the stupid ones, but not the smart ones. This year we also used De-con, and had the first mouse free hunting season ever.

That is too funny. We used to hunt around Trout Lake and there were some of those in the cabin and out buildings.

Yeah, we use a similar sort of thing for polar bears... cut a big hole in the ice and put a ring of peas around the edge. When the bear comes up to take a pea you kick him in the icehole...
