After reading about the other thread with Sombrero Ranch I have a question. Do any of you know of anyone that rents horses/mules in the Gunnison area? I have called the Chambers of Commerce in Gunnison and Montrose, the DOW, the USFS and have come up basically blank with anyone. We are looking to rent at least 2 horses. Any help would be appreciated.

He might be too far away (Whitewater) but you could try Fred Pinnt at Mt. Garfield Stables. We rented from him about five years ago. It can't hurt to call. 970-242-4008.

JH Horses in Carbonale, Jeff and Barbie. Nice folks, used one of their horses last year, good horse. They don't allow packing antlers on their horses though. He runs some drop camps also. I picked mine up, but they do deliver, but I don't know how far.

Two sources....one better than the other.
In the Blue Mesa Reservoir area:
John Ferroe 970-641-4671
Some of his horses can be a pain in the backside but most are pretty good.
The other one is in Montrose:
Lloyd Watson 21270 Uncompahgre Rd 970-249-4184
This guy's animals are GREAT on the trail. He usually lets me take one of his trailers to transport them to the area I hunt..about an hour or so away...and then bring it back when I take the horses back at the end of the season. Ferroe's horses are only about fifteen minutes from the trailhead where I hunt, but I drive the hour or so to get horses from Lloyd instead because the quality is much better.
You see in this world, there's two kinds of people my friend; those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Some of the guys that have hunted with me rented from Bar Diamond out of Hotchkiss when we hunted in the the Crested Butte area. Dependable nice folks and good horses.
