Thanks Odessa. Good article on top of the loading info. I've been wandering around the desert wasteland of the internet searching for similar stories and information. I saved this one.

Not to kick a guy while he is "hangin' head... but, what were you thinking when you sold your .45 Colt Mountain Gun??? Aside from the, no ammunition to shoot in it if you don't reload and even then you need to prepay to get on Starline's brass order waiting list thing...that isgrin

I picked up a new production model... even with the MIM trigger and ugly lock, I think it is now my favorit revolver... the weight and balance of the Mountain Gun seems perfect to me.

The S&W 625s do feel great in the hand but, for me, the Ruger Bisley Blackhawk is perfection when it comes to the 45LC! cool

wish I could help ya. I stocked up on factory stuff years ago, and then started reloading.
My count shows over two K rounds of one sort or another stuffed away in the locker.

For those already loading and casting their own (even when I buy lead at $1 a pound, I'm shooting for about a dime a shot), be sure to try the Lee mould 452-255-RF. It's a "cowboy" profile RNFP that you can simply tumble-lube and load as cast.

My all-purpose load is 7.0 W231, standard primer and that bullet. It duplicates the performance of the original loading, which is no wussy performer but is pleasant to shoot. You can also use 8.0 of Unique or Universal for about the same result.

For heavy hunting loads I agree <since I don't expect to be able to afford a Freedom Arms 97 anytime soon> Just bought an RCBS 300 grain gas check mold to try Ruger only level loads in the Bisley I got from you...

I have been having so much fun shooting the RCBS 270 SAA mold bullets in the 950 >1000 fps range that I have not started on the heavy loads for the Ruger yet.

I have an Ultra Dot red dot on the Mountain Gun at the moment... even with my 54 year old eyes I have the steel plates in full surrender out to 50 yards off hand.

I also have a custom hollow point mold due to ship soon in the same 270 SAA design. I'll post a link to the group buy thread on Cast Bullet Forum... I think tomorrow is the deadline to place an order... last head count was 80 preorders on this one.

I shoot the 255 hard cast in my old Colt SA, but it shoots them about 6 inches low and I have to allow for that, It is dead on with the slow lead factory stuff..damit..It is reall super accurate with both, but hard to shoot with the handload. It is at the bottom of the black with the Silver Tips so thats what I keep in it at the house.

i had thought of drilling out the bullet for that rcbs mould, but this makes it easier. The interesting thing when these moulds come in is to make a duplex bullet, hard at the back, and soft in the front. It should be just awesome at about 1000fps.

I was thinking along the same lines....hope to do some field testing on a groundhog soon... I have a second smaller lead pot... no idea where to get pure lead though?

I'm thinking 10 to 20 pounds would be enough to last a long time.

I was going to post this in the Cowboy Action section and still will.

I just finished my first set of 45 Colts. I saw the cost of the loaded Cowboy 45 Colt and figured that not only could I do a better job but do it MUCH cheaper.

I am sure I am right on both counts but at $54.00 a box (49.99 + 8%Tax) it will not take long to break even for the Brass Powder, and bullets.

I had the Primers and some powder for some "heavy" Ruger Blackhawk loads but not for Cowboy loads.

I just finished them this weekend and have not had a chance to shoot any and probably never buy a box of, preloaded $50.00 a box, ammo to compare them to so I will just have to be happy with the cost savings.

325 Gr. LBT GC's for me stoked with H110. The party never ends!

And if I really want to have fun, I grab the 475 Linebaugh with 425 Gr. LBT's and afore-mentioned H110. Woohoo!

I can't even imagine and I don't really want to know how much those would cost if factory loaded.

I think the same thing that's going on with 45LC ammo is the same thing that's been going on with .380 ammo the past couple of years. Lots of folks jumping on the Taurus Judge and variants bandwagon and starting to purchase 45LC ammo. Just a guess.....

My favorite .45LC cast bullet is the Lee 255 RF. It takes up a lot of case volume for improved loading density, it has a large meplat for excellent killing power, and when correctly matched to the revolver's dimensions is very accurate. I prefer 9.5 grains of Unique in my short RBH for everything. I've shot plenty of targets, small game and a few deer with it - outstanding results. I don't need 1300 fps to do what my packin' revolver needs to do.
