Now that's a squirrel gitter there.
Whatever a 7x57 can do a 270 can do better.

It's hard to beat a rimfire for fun. My current favorite is a Super Single Six. I have had several new shooters ask me what kind of handgun to buy to learn to shoot with and when I tell them to get a .22 and a lot of affordable ammo. They tell me they are going to get a .45 or a .40. I don't know why the ask if they have already made up their mind.

Yeah, funny how that works. I own a couple of .22 RF revolvers myself. The only thing wrong with them is they lack a little killing power on some of the tougher small game items. They kill birds pretty well with HP ammo, but don't always anchor things like squirrels and rabbits well with a chest hit. But, for plain fun, they can't be beat. I have no disagreement at all that for a first handgun, a good .22, that's easily seen sights and a great trigger, is the way to go. I'll go so far as to say such a gun, besdes lots of fun, is also as good a way as any for an experienced shooter to keep up his skills. E

22's are great game getters. I was raised on a farm they also dropped butcher hogs and beef with one shot. I knew of folks who lived further out in the hollers that also used them for their deer rifle. I've brought home more squirrels, rabbits and frogs than most folks could count. True a lung shot one might run like a deer, but not long they soon fall or drop. I've used a 22 to headshoot a few coyotes and feral dogs. If push came to shove it might be the best option for daily handgun carry in the lower 48.

I popped a fair sized rattle snake in the forest yesterday with my little trail companion, a Model 63 Smith. It was exciting, as I was almost on top of it before I saw the dang thing. First shot right through the head, at about feet, and from a quick draw. That was fun!

I picked up a S&W model 18 .22 with a 4 inch barrel that perfectly matches my model 19 .38/.357 in both look and feel. Makes for fun and cheap practice. Wish I still had my H&R model 622 that I use to carry on my trapline just for the good memories. Killed a lot of small game with that handgun.

Nothing I've shot has every survived a hit from a .22 RF HP. I've had some that took a while to die, but die they did. However, I've found that .38 Special or .45 ACP wadcutters anchor the small stuff on the spot. You can eat right up to the bullet hole. For an all around woods carry round, it's pretty tough to beat the .22 Rimfire Magnum. E

Read an article recently by Bart Skelton called "Real men shoot 22s."Great inexpensive practice, and loads of fun.Bart talked about how those 22s helped his accuracy in the bigger calibers as well.

Everyone should own a 22 rimfire, nothings more fun or practical when woods bumming or teaching your kids how to shoot. I have a S&W 10 shot revolver that gets used a great deal, we shoot at an indoor range all winter using any rimfire that will hold 10 rounds. Its a combat course thats different every week & a lot of fun when there's not much you can do outdoors at minus 20 degrees! One stage is called Mozambique, its 3 seperate targets & you have to shoot 2 shots to the body & one to the head on each of them for a total of 9 shots from the low ready position, in 8 years of shooting this match the fastest time recorded is 2.95 seconds........with my 10 shot revolver! My 7-year old son calls the S&W Model 18 "my gun". Anytime we go to the farm or lease, he asks if we're taking "my gun"....meaning his gun.
We have fun shooting coke cans with it ((highly supervised, of course (not supervision for me....supervision for him)).

RJM, don't want to be hijacking the thread here. The indoor match is held at Logan, Utah every monday & tuesday, throughout the winter, usually have 40-50 shooters, all with 22's, I'm the only guy that shoots a revolver. You can go to Utahshooters.org & go back through the archives & see where I shot the 2.95 score. We've been doing this for 8 years & it just keeps getting bigger & everynight the stages are different, very challenging. This is one of the stages, the distance always varies & you always need a minimum of 8 shots, sometimes the targets are drop turns, sometimes they disappear, sometimes you knock down a steel target that activates 2 movers, its always something different. This is one of the Mozambique stages, again, they are different every week, & the distance is different. The white is a no shoot & a 5 second penalty & has to be shot in sequence, 2 shots to the body & then one to the head. The starting position is gun in hand & holding at low ready or sometimes an object on the wall. All of the targets are paper or steel. Dick
