When I was a kid most everyone I knew called the 357 Magnum the "357 Remington Magnum". I have recently seen it again in an advertisement. From reading a couple different resources it seems Winchester and S&W developed it. If this is true how did Remington get its name in there?

LOL - they printed that name on the ammo thy produced. Computers were mechanical devices at that time.

I never knew it was called that. Are you sure you aren't confusing the round with the "44 Remington Magnum?" The latter was a joint development of Remington and Smith & Wesson after Elmer Kieth goaded them into doing it.

Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

I always heard it called the 357 Winchester Magnum.

If you dont have a copy follow this link to the thread on the Beartooth Bullets shooters forum and use the link in post # 7 to download a copy of Phil Sharpes Complete Guide to Handloading.

Page 292 in the Chapter: Magnum Handgun and Rifle Possibilities detail how S&W, Winchester, Remington, Du Pont Burnside Laboratory and the Hercules Experimental Station all collaborated on the development of the 357 Magnum. Phil Sharpe, Elmer Keith and a number of other handloaders lead the way in exploring the high performance handgun.

Must be a geographical word, and thats not uncommon..I'm 75 years old and from far west Texas and I never heard it called anything but a 375 magnum..I do recall it being referred to as a 357 Remington magnum, but they were referring to ammunition of the Remington manufacturer.

Even Remington doesn't call it the "357 Remington Magnum".

http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/handgun/pistol-and-revolver.aspx

357 Remington Maximum, yes. 44 Remington Magnum, yes.

But the official name of the 357 Magnum is the 357 S&W Magnum.

The 357 Remington Magnum got its name because Remington-UMC accepted and loaded the ammunition specification to perform by Elmer Keith and S&W. Winchester got cold feet and pulled out of the research and development for a handgun load approaching 48,000 psi(nominal).
The rest is history and you can take it to the bank. In deferrence to 357 chambered smaller arms, SAAMI has dropped the
pressure specs into the high 30's.
The original loaded 158 grain bullet ran 1520 ft/sec from the 8 1/2 inch barrel Smith revolver and was later shortened to 8 3/8 inch for production.

I stand corrected - Natman is right it is the 357 S&W Magnum, and there is a 357 Remington Maximum, one of which is in my possession.

After reading the interesting article on the S&W 357 Registered Magnum in Handloader #266 by Brian Pearce I looked up the referenced article by Elmer Keith in the November 1935 issue of the America Rifleman. On the right hand side of page 10 Keith wrote The arm is chambered for the Winchester .357 Magnum cartridge, the shell of which is the same diameter as that of the .38 Special, but about 1/8-inch longer

When it came to the loadings, Elmer had maybe half a dozen or so. Elmer thought it was great Phil Sharpe had around a hundred I think. And Elmer thought it was even better that Phil had chronographed them all !!!
