I have the opportunity to pick up a cheap Mod 77 Mk 1 blued rifle ..cheap because it has some serious pitting on one side of the action...from bad long term storage...

I was thinking of getting a friend who has a surface grinder to take off a thou or 2 to get rid of the pits...the Ruger name stamping etc is way deeper than the pitting (I think).

Would such action render the action unsafe ?
Are Ruger actions surface hardened ?

cheers
Peter

Won't hurt a thing. Just don't render the ser. # unreadable. Rugers are made from a through hardening alloy steel very similar to 4140, so they are not surface hardened.

Grind away, but as RAN noted, don't touch the SN or you will have have broken Federal Law by defacing the SN and will be subject to the associated penalties.

Thanks Ran,

A few years back I was thinking of getting a Ruger No. 1 engraved on the side of the action but the engraver said 'no way' receiver is too hard...???..so I was wondering about the M77's..

Cheers

Jeff,
Although rifle is in Australia point taken...we have similar laws on altering/defacing S/N's....

BTW I have 2 x 260's ...a Rem 700 & Ruger M77 Mk II....bloody good calibre !
