I saw an older Browning, BBR I think, recently at a gun show, in .264 and it has been nagging at me ever since. I keep hearing this voice in the distance saying, "Come get me". I know the fellow who had it and he probably still does. I've heard all kinds of horror stories about throat erosion, barrel life, etc. and haven't taken the time to sort all the old wives tales out. The round seems interesting to me and I would appreciate hearing about it. It may spur me to action to go find this rifle. It had some super wood, and was in prestine shape, the only reason I didn't buy it then was I was not familiar with the ballistics of the .264.
Any insights about it would be appreciated.

Hi,

I have a feeling that the 264 Win is really going to take off. With the latest fad for the 6.5-284, people are going to want more speed and here comes the 264 Win. I think this cartridge was ahead of it's time. With the barrels, powders, and bullets we have now, I think this cartridge is really going to work as a long range shooter. I was leaning towards a 6.5-284 but now am thinking about the 264 Win. I can get all the speed the 6.5-284 craves without using a hot load. Not a bad idea? I have a 6.5/06 now and really like this caliber. I beleave the 264 Win is the next step.

Catch you later,

The Big Dog

Count me in. I still have the first deer rifle I ever bought; a M70 sporter in .264WM back in about 1971-72. It's very accurate and I've taken a lot of deer with it. I'll never give it up.

Talk me into it! I have a Ruger LH SS 7 Mag in the safe that I've never been happy with and I am seriously thinking about converting it to 264 Win Mag. I have a left hand MRC action also sitting around that I was thinking of building into a 6.5-284 dedicated to long range varmint shooting but the 264WM looks like it would do it better.

Count me in. I have a Pre-64 Model 70 in .264 Win. Mag. (born in 1959) still all original. Shoots 7/8" groups with standard Core-Lokts. Thanks...Bill.

My current .264 is a Remington 700 with stainless barrel. It started life as a BDL but when I got hold of it I put it in a Fajen laminate, had the remaining "blueing" removed from the stainless barrel and had the action matte blued. I call it a "semi-custom" job. Anyway, it shoots like gangbusters and has stoned numerous deer. I had an old Browning FN Safari Grade .264 but accuracy began to deteriorate to an unacceptable level so I parted with it last summer.

Just getting started here with the .264, Mine's a Remington blued 700ADL with 26" stainless barrel attached. Shoots well now and may get a new stock one of these days. Heck, it's a rifle made up of available parts and shoots far better than it should. Load workup has commenced with 120's, 125 Partitions and some 140 Sierra's. I'm looking forward to trying Ramshot Magnum and MagPro as powders - just need range time with the chronograph. Ward

It's funny, once you own one, you seem to be forever bitten by it. I've gone through several including a Winchester, Ruger and Remington's last SS BDL run with a 26" barrel. The thing is, I've sold them all! They just don't do enough more than my 6.5-06 and 6.5 Gibbs will. The Remington probably could have worked out to be a good rifle, but I'm just too turned off factory rifles right now. The more I looked at it and thought about what I "needed" to do to it to make it a worthwhile shooter, the more I figured I should just start from scratch and build it the way I want. I sold it without ever having shot it.

Regardless, I still get a yen to build one. Someday... when I finish up other projects I've gotten started.

I'm in this club also!! I have owned as many as 3 - 264's at one time, but at present have only one, a custom rifle built on an early 700 action. It has an ADL stock, redone with a floorplate, and a 26" Pac-Nor SS supermatch sporter tube. It is very, very accurate, and has accounted for several deer on open alfalfa and grainfields. I have also taken moose and elk with this chambering. I have yet to recover a 140 Partition from any game animal I have shot with it. I use H5010 and Retumbo to get the best results out of mine. A 140 at close to 3300 is a missile, especially in a rifle that shoots them into " at 100 meters, and 1.5" at 300. Regards, Eagleye.

264Win,
Definitely count me in! I am proud to be in the company of such perceptive and select individuals! You might also add, to your list, "kicks like a 270"!!
This thread is kinda starting to look like an AA meeting, "when and how long have YOU been drinking"!! So, here goes. I can distinctly remember when I was a young boy, reading Winchester's ads, in probably Guns and Ammo mag, for the M70 "Westerner" in .264 Win Mag. This to me, just had to be the "sexiest" rifle on earth!! Unfortunately, I never had the chance to fulfill my dreams during those years. My first .264 was a M70 I purchased in the early 80's, no, it wasn't a "Westerner", it was a then current production rifle, which I fought with for several years, and it never did shoot for $hit. When Remington came out with the 700 Classic in .264 in 1986, I got my hot sweaty hands on one, and WOW! This gun is a shooter!! It will shoot 3-shot groups with all the holes touching! With Rem. factory ammo! Of course, the M70 was soon down the road. This 700 .264 shall never pass from my possession! I shot a truckload of whitetails and antelope with this rifle, during those years, and it is just perfect for that application (if you are hunting the wide open spaces), just like the old Winchester ads claimed!! By the way, I am NOT dissing M70's!! The current M70 Classics are a great rifle. I must I believe that, because I now own 10 of 'em!! However, none of them are .264's. I was waiting for a stainless one, and none were forthcoming. So, when Acusport had Remington run off several hundred .264's in the 700 BDL SS w/ 26" bbl., a few years ago, I ratholed 2 of those, but haven't had a chance to get one running yet. Guess I been too busy trying out the latest caliber of the month!
Several years ago, I had a chance to purchase a NIB pre-64 M70 "Westerner" .264, with all the hang tags, papers, etc., and I didn't because I thought the price excessive. Doggone it, anyhow, if I could get that rifle now, even with a large premium, I would jump on it! Now in my old age, I definitely feel the need to own a genuine pre-64 M70 "Westerner" .264 in pristine, if not NIB condition, just to ogle. To fondle something like this would be a sacrilege! Merry Christmas fellas!!

Might as well go ahead and put whitetail on the list, he had me to make him one a few days ago. Its on a Wby MKV action, High Tech stock, # 4 Lilja @ 24 inches. I think we'll put a Swarvoski scope on Talleys, its going to be a coyote thumper.

I fell in love with the round the first time I layed eyes on a box of abandoned ammo in my uncle's cabinet in 1980. It took me fifteen years to finally come accross a Win 70 classic in a local gunshop. It seems some guy had ordered the rifle and left a deposit, but never came back to retrieve either. I got the rifle for balance owed, and Wonderful Wifey rounded up reloading dies and left under the Christmas tree that year.
My son got his 4-H gelding tangled in an aspen laying over the trail on his first elk hunt at the age of thirteen. So now my Winchester sports a grey and black laminated stock from Midway.
We have a lot of memories tied to that 264.
Let me know the location of the formal meetings <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

It never fails to irk me when some character who has never owned a 264 states that it is simply a "loud" 270 Winchester. With all due respect to the 270, it is a fine cartridge, but it is NOT a 264 Win Mag!! I do not believe that a 22" barrelled 264 is the way to go, but when you have the extra 2-4" it does shine, especially with those sleek 139/140 grain bullets. Take my present 264, for example. If I sight the 140 Partition to hit 3" high at 100 yards, it will be a maximum of about 3.6" high, zero at around 315, 7" low at 400 and 20" low at 500. This is from targets actually shot at 2000 ft elevation in 65 Temps, not from some chart. That makes hitting a deer's vital area right out to 500 pretty easy, AND it arrives with over 1700 ft lbs of energy, plenty to do the job! This trajectory and energy is very similar to the 7mm STW with the 140 started at 3450. Vive le 264 Win Mag!!!! Eagleye.

I have a Win.Mdl 70 Classic Sporter NIB 26 In. barrel that I got some years ago. Got some brass and reloading dies but have not shot or reloaded for it. How about you 264 Win. fans post some of your pronghorn, deer and elk loads for it ? What power scopes do you have on them ?

This is for only people who concider themselvs members of the 264 Winchester cult. Clearly you don't. I will however like to thank you for your comments.
Also, in responce to your

"What shoots as flat as a .270, penetrates like a 7mm Mauser, and kicks like a .257 Robts?"

the answer is clearly the 243 Winchester which is on a totally different playing field from our grand 264.
