Somewhat new here, have a few questions about the Marlin 1895 Guide Guns.

Does/has Marlin made a version in blue/walnut with a pistol grip and the 18" barrel?

Is there any pattern to the letters after the model #?

Never owned a Marlin lever gun and have no earthly use for a 45-70, but I find myself eyeballing them nonetheless.

Thanks

No letter is a 1895 with a pistol grip and a 22" bbl.
G - is the guide gun
M - is the 450 Marlin Mag,
GBL - is the guide with a big loop lever
SBL - stainless with big loop

Stuff like that. There's more, but a look at the Marlin website will do a better job than I can.

Thanks. I've looked at the Marlin website but I've seen some models on gunbroker that were not listed.

Marlin often makes up runs of exclusive models as spec'd by the distributors who order them. So yeah, there are a lot more variations out there than what you see in the catalog.

.

I have an 1895 45-70 with 22" barrel and pistol grip stock. Ti's a "Model 1895 SS". The SS is not stainless steel. I believe the first "S" is sport or sporter and the second "S" is for cross bolt safety.

Haven't been able to find anything built just the way I wanted it, been considering getting one like you have and having the barrel trimmed back to 18". I like the guide guns, but never been much on straight grips or laminate/ss on a lever gun.

An 1895 45/70 levergun is just plain fun. I didn't need one either, but I have one and would rather carry it more than any other gun I own.

I have one with a 22" barrel and a straight stock. Front bead is dovetailed into the barrel instead of on a ramp. The curved, hard plastic buttplate is rough with heavy loads. Of course it is an early 1970's rifle.

I'd been drooling over the GBL/SBL with 18.5" barrels. Now on Gunbroker there are STP variants with a 16.25" barrel...

..

I think the SS stands for side safety.
