It, along with the 25-06 are really the best rounds out there for taking varmints and deer sized game. The 243 isn't nearly in their league.
I've had a 240 Wby, which was sweet, but expensive to shoot. I've had 2 - 243's both sucked beyond belief. I've never owned a 6mm Rem, but I would gladly own one. Just need someone to make one with 24" barrel. Just don't understand the lack of popularity.
I am glad to see the "Bob" making a come back. It's a truly great one.

I know that's strong, but I really don't like the 243, bordering on hate. So, I am admittedly biased. It is the only .308 based cartridge I would never buy again.
Just don't understand its wild popularity versus the 6mm. Even with its initial oops you'd think after this long it'd balance out some.

It never really got off the ground to start with. By the time they fixed it, the .243 was the runaway favorite. Its a good cartridge, but so are alot of other one's that never achieved much success.

I can't like a 243 as much as I try, but can dig a 6mm Remington.

The best thing about the 6mm is that it shows (really) how much better the 257 Roberts has always been than either.....

Remington has the 7mm Mag for a hunting round; nothing else much really needed. All the rest are varmint types of some sort. Winchester, OTOH, hasn't put much of a bounty on many varmints while they "need" a whole passel of various cartridges to round out their hunting efforts. Go figure. : grin:

I prefer the .243 or the .243AI ... still a 6mm with a few great bullets to choose from (not unlike the 6mmRem) ... but you only burn about 45g of powder, brass is easy to find and relatively inexpensive, and you can even get match grade (Lapua) brass for it if you wish ... it's very accurate, and deadly as can be when sending 85g TSX's at roughly 3400fps ...
and the .243 is a little less of a barrel burner than the 6mmRem, which has its merits.

I really like the 6mm Rem necked up to .257. It'd make a great factory loaded round. Hmmmmm....

I always thought it was like comparing a swift to a .22/250.....not a heck of a lot to argue about either way.(.243vs6MM)
Got a friend who shoots a 6MM AI.....pretty "skookum".
Luck....is the residue of design...

It seems as though the 243 gets about all the good you can get out of that bore size. Even the 240 weatherby in the loading manuals doesn't show a drastic increase in velocity, well at least according to my perception of drastic. YMMV

I am glad to see the "Bob" making a come back. It's a truly great one. Aside from it's devotees here at 24HR, I don't see a comeback in the works. Kimber did chamber one this past yr, but until you see Remington/Ruger/Winchester in the game, it's still on the "B" list. I've been shooting one for 5 yrs now. I don't know of another person here that owns one. Too bad really, cuz it's better than any 6mm or 243. .

I own a batch of 243s.. I like it, but keep it in perspective for its bore size..
I own a custom barreled 6mm on a long action Model 700, with a fast twist. it is definitely in a league above a 243 in a short action...
and for all the guys who claim a 257 Roberts is a better cartridge than the 6mm Rem, I have to pull the same thing on them...( my favorite cartridge) is the 257 Roberts necked up to 6.5 mm or the 6.5 x 57...
not only better bullet selections, it also has heavier bullets available for it.. like the 129, 140 and 160 grainers...
ya know tho, a rifle with a switch barrel set up.. and a barrel in the 6mm Rem ( fast twist), a barrel in 257 Roberts, a 6.5 mm barrel in 6.5 x 57 and a 7mm Mauser barrel...I could live with that for all my bigger game hunting in No America ( I'm not destined to be hunting grizzleys)

Ruger is still making a Bob in their Hawkeye and their Ultralight....
That said...its more of a clinger-on than a " comeback"...
The Bob has its devoted fans amongst loonies and refuses to die, here in the states.
There is the same kind of following for a .41 mag in handguns here...

True, but the 6.5x57 is getting out of the "dual purpose" zone that the 243 and the 257 do so well at. .

I always found it hard to justify a 6mmRem when there was a 257 Roberts to be had..... I think the 6mm's trump on the target range due to all the bullet development they got,but I don't care about that too much, cause I liked to shoot animals with my Roberts and never found it lacking. It may be true that you can trump the heavy bullets of a 25 by nudging up to 6.5,but if you shoot a 6mm you don't get the advantage of either one....
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.
