I've been thinking about a NULA in .284 Win. Would you say that the .284 falls between the 7-08 and the 7wsm in terms power, speed, recoil, etc? Are you gaining much over the 7-08? Seems like it might shoot the 160 gr bullets better than a 7-08. Any info is much appreciated. Thanks!

The .284 will gain 100-150 fps over the 7mm-08, depending on bullet weight, and the 7mm WSM will gain 150-200 fps over the .284.

I have a short action push feed Model 70 action laying around. Its crossed my mind to have it barreled in .284. Are there any issues with feeding that I should be concerned with?

Probably not in a push-feed, but you never know until you try it. I wouldn't think it would be too hard to get a .284 to work in it though.

I remember when Mark Wright would take the M70 short actions, remove the spacer and turn them into 284's.

As far as speeds go I feel that the 284 with 140's has 100 over the 7/08. The NULA in a 284 has a Lot of sex appeal by my way of thinking.

I have an ULA in .284 and love it. It is probably the last rifle I would part with. It might be the perfect mountain rifle when scoped with a lighweight Leupold 2.5x8. I've taken a bighorn ram in Wyoming, a West Texas auodad, and several deer and hogs with my ULA. It is also VERY accurate if you take care not to heat up the barrel, which is 22" long, I might add.

With 140 bullets, I get 3000-3050 fps, so it runs around 150 fps faster than my 7mm-08. The case capacity of the .284 is similar to the .280 Rem cartridge. Just think of the .284 as a .280 in a short catridge, and NULA's Model 20 action, being slightly longer than most medium actions, is perfect for this round.

When I talked with Melvin Forbes many years ago, he said that the .284 was his most popular loading. That may still be true, or not. No matter, the NULA and .284 round go together like PB & J.

Dober,

I'm a novice on Model 70's, although I have one for sale right now. If it doesn't go I was thinking about using the action for a .284 Win build or .338 Federal. It currently is a .22-250. What's this spacer you speak of?

I know this is sacrilege, but I had about the only ULA (not NULA) that didn't shoot accurately....and it was a 284. I owned it for years, and messed with it off and on with all kinds of different loads. Shot 140's fine, but would shoot 150's or 160's worth a hoot. Bought it used--it had been on one Stone sheep hunt--very cheap with a Leupy compact 3x9. I had lusted after a ULA way back when lightweight rifles were rare. But by the late 80's I had already figured out how to make M700's light, so I eventually sold the ULA for a lot more than I paid.

I like the idea of a SA light rifle, but these days a lightweight LA rifle can be built or bought relatively cheap. Or, with today's bullets, a 7-08 can accomplish a lot.

I have a Rifles Inc. .284, Lex Webernecks Lightweight Strata model that with a Swarov.
AV 3.5-10x weighs only a few oz over 6lbs. It's his version of the NULA I guess. It's on R700 SA so allows an cartridge OAL of about 2.90".

It must be a "fast" barrel because I get 3150 fps with the Barnes 140-gr. TTSX with R17 without the traditional pressure signs; still I backed off to 3050 fps and the 140s hit right on the 3rd hash mark of the Swarov's reticle at 400 yds. Perfect.

Lord-willing, I go on a bighorn hunt, I have my rifle. I love the rifle and the cartridge which feeds very well. What 's not to like? When I first ordered it I chose the 7SAUM which he refused to do due to his past feeding problems. His answer: the .284 Win. I'm very happy with it.

No flies on the 284. Ballistics are about identical to the 280.
However, the 284 can work in a short action.
I have a 284 custom on a model 98 action.

I have a 284 but it's on a Savage 99. It feeds slicker than s*ot out of the 4 round rotary. Very effective.

sounds like you don't have enough complications in your life...
nothing wrong with the .284, per se, but acquire your brass before you buy... i expect you'll be punching out 6.5/.284 cases... but find them first...

i've got a buddy with a .25/.284 and he's due to rebarrel... he's thinking of a .308 based cartridge, but also that he elected for minor mods to enhance smooth feeding of the .284 cases... he wonders if it's gonna turn around and bite him...

I have had no problems buying 284 brass. It is seasonal, however, and not always in stock. Just went through two bags last night. It is not near the quality of my 6.5-284 Lapua brass though.
