Yea, I flew bypass for a few years during the winter months and became quite familiar with the 3 P's - Pop, Pampers and Pilot Bread - along with cases and cases of beer. Two cases banded together is 44 lbs

There were a couple of people in Anchorage that would do logistic runs for you at a modest price, don't know if there still in business.

Gawd, please no Pilot Bread....Used to use the Sailor Boy on the packaging as a BB gun target when I couldn't go shoot. We used to pack an empty suitcase with another, slightly smaller one inside, and 2 days clothes in a carry-on. Business in ANC for two days, shopping at Carr's at 4 a.m. day of the return flight, pour it all in the suitcases, and back to Barrow. Nuiqsut was worse

Sailor Boy and a mug of hot tea, what a snack!! Alaska is about the only place you can buy those things.

Sailor Boy and a mug of hot tea, what a snack!! Alaska is about the only place you can buy those things. A guy can get hooked on those things... with peanut butter and honey. After my sister in law spent a winter with us in Point Hope (OK- she wasn't my sister in law yet...), we had to send her care packages of Sailor Boy for the next several years. Alaska is the sole market for Sailor Boy pilot bread, I think- maybe a few go to sail-type sailors also, by special order, I think I read somewhere. It is what the old time sailors referred to as "hard tack". Beats the living hell out of the soda crackers in the old C and K rations. If I remember correctly from 15 years ago in Barrow, by-pass mail minimum is 1,000 lbs.
