I always thought my Dad had a Mountie, but his short barreled 39 is marked "39A" on the barrel.

I bought this from a fellow member recently. Are these rare? I don't much give a rip either way because I love the little rifle. I'm just curious. What is the difference between a 39M and 39A with a shorter barrel? This one sports a 20" tube.

Just different years and variations but both are mounties. 20" full mag Model 39's with a straight grip are Mounties.

Thanks Bill. This one doesn't have the safety. I really like it. But it's going to get some XS sites once Brownells gets them in.

XS always has the sights, since they make them, so why wait - order directly.

You might want to check out the Skinner peep first, though.

I had not heard of the Skinner. I just googled them and I think I'll just order one of those. That is one clean looking sight!

I have skinners on 2 guns and they are amazing. They are well made, and the customer service is bar none! I will be getting a 3rd set for a 336 soon as well. One note, you can remove the appeture and its a ghost ring, its like a 2 for 1.

Now for that Mountie, I have been looking for one for a while. I found a 1953 39 Carbine that was redone and save from death, and have 2007 39A that I really enjoy but needed a tiny bit of work as of late to fix a issue with the action. Both will never be sold and passed down. I do think the Mountie is the perfect configuration for the model 39, JMHO. Yours also comes with family history which makes it priceless. You can teach your kids how to shoot with it and then their kids too and pass it down when your done. Gotta love a Marlin!

Mrlin Bill,I'm not trying to hijack this tread ,but quickly,did you have to remove the rear factory sight to mount and use your new Skinner sight?I've thought about trying these ,but I don't want to change anything on my Mountie,if you know what I mean.

You really have no choice, IF you want to mount & properly use ANY receiver peep sight - Skinner or other - and it's quite normal.

The peep may/may not sit a tad higher than the issue open sight's line-of-sight, but that makes no difference, as the rear barrel sight should be removed (and replaced with a slot filler blank), for the reason of giving a clear/clean sight picture, when using the receiver sight/peep.

Shameless, yes I did. I put a Marble fancy dovetail filler in. It looks real sharp and the gun was no longer factory so I did not bat an eye.

My first gun was a Marlin 39A in 1963. I replaced the sight with a Redfield receiver sight and put a filler block in the barrel dovetail. I also refinished the stock. A year or so ago, the accuracy had fallen off enough that I sent it to the factory to be rebarreled. Collector value? Nill. Intrinsic value to me? Priceless.

Five years ago I finally found a nice 1969 vintage Mountie and snapped it up. It now has a Williams Foolproof rear and a XS Systems front. This time I did save the original sights, but I don�t ever expect to sell it.

I guess this one was built in 1978. Just looked it up.
