I have plans to buy a Glock 34 for just all around shooting, but I wanted to see what you opinions were on it compared to others in the same price range. The main use will be target shooting in informal matches and just typical range time. I already have the Model 20, I just need something that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to shoot.

Thanks.

Look at a Kahr TP9 or a Browning HP (Pratical if you can find one). If you want something concealable but still easy to shoot at the range, look at a Kahr CW or P9.

the Beretta 9000 compact I recently picked up used, was $300. Lots of bargains out there if you look hard.

For $700, you should be able to pick up a huge variety of different brands.

For $700, you can buy a bunch of 10mm Auto.

Just a thought.

The Glock 34 is a pretty good choice for a range gun. I would never lighten the trigger on a carry Glock, but I would on a range gun.

Still, for $700 I'd go Hi-Power (FN or Browning) or Sig.

I like the Hi-Powers and the Sigs, but I have a gift card to a store in town that I need to use. They are a little high on everything, but the $250 card offsets that.

This won't be a carry weapon, just an all around shooting/plinking gun.

VA, $700 will buy a lot of 10mm ammo, but I already have a pretty good supply. The 10 can do a lot of things, but it can't touch the 9mm for $9.75/box here in town.

I settled on a Kahr P9, but it's for concealed carry.

For a fun gun/range gun, I still want a Baretta 92, with a Hi-Power coming in a close second. Once had a Hi-Power in .40, should have NEVER sold it....

Until STI recently released their Spartan in 9mm, there were no new 9mm 1911's under $700.

If I already had a G20, I would stick to the same platform and get a used G17 or 19 with night sights for ~ $400, and spend any extra on some good 9mm and 10mm ammo.

I have also looked at the Beretta 92 and Taurus PT92. The CZ SP-01 seems like a nice piece as well.

The earlier version Taurus 92's are a great buy. You can find them in excellent condition for a song on GB. The earlier version have the small block letters and wood grips with medallion. They were real popular back in the day.

I vote for a Glock 19 equipped with night sites. Then spend the balance of the $700 on ammo.

Or go the classic route and look for a clean BHP.

What's the difference in the earlier version of the 92 and the current model?

I got a great deal on a 3rd gen Glock 19 with factory night sights last year. Those sights were awesome! I could not get use to the Glock trigger and ended up with a CZ-75 PCR.

From the Stephen Camp review;

The pistol being looked at in this article is the only Taurus automatic I own and is a PT-92 AF. It is an older pistol and the ambidextrous thumb safety does not decock the pistols as it does on current PT-92 pistols if forcefully pushed past the normal "down to fire, off-safe" position. While this can be viewed as a safety improvement, I do have some misgivings about it.

I also believe the older pistols were of higher quality.

I really like my compact version. After years and years of buying, shooting and selling pistols I ended up with a CZ-75 PCR and a Delta Elite.
