I'm wondering about whether I should be looking at noise-cancelling or noise isolating in-ear headphones for protecting my hearing and enabling me to listen to music while I cut the lawn.
Any advice?

The cheapest way to go would be to use your shooting muffs and sing to yourself.
I could wish a lot of things on my worst enemy but neuropathy ain't one of them.

Somehow, I convinced my wife to cut the lawn while I am at work. Still not sure how I did that....

I'm a teacher - little more than six hours of in-class time per day. My wife is a lawyer - lots of 12 hour days. Somehow, I don't think I'm gonna pull that one off - not for lack of tryin' though.

Peltor Worktunes AM/FM Radio headsets would probably work good for that purpose. I use them at the Indy 500 for listening to the race while damping the car noise. Works pretty good. They cost between $40 to $50 at places like Menards.

I've been thinking about getting a set of these EarBuds myself. I wear a broad brimmed hat when I'm on the tractor or working around the farm, and I haven't seen any of the ear muffs that would work for me. But these look like the ticket. EarBuds MP3 Compatible Earplugs Price: $39.95 Headphones and earplugs...all-in-one
Hearing protection that you can use with your MP3 player
* Soft earplugs with NRR 26 * Volume control on 48" cord * MP3 compatible
Innovative earplugs block out dangerous noise while letting you listen to your favorite music using your MP3 player. Earplugs feature a soft, triple-flanged shape that inserts easily into your ears and provides long-wearing comfort. Convenient volume control is located on the 48" cord and lets you easily adjust the clear-sounding digital audio. Earplugs limit the volume to 82 db. NRR of 26 dB. Imported.

Those ear buds are just plain cool.
I wear my ipod ear phones under a set of Peltors, works pretty well and I'm out no additional cash. If I were going to spend money on something, I think the ear buds would be the cats arse.

I like those too. I try to wear muffs when I'm running anything motorized. I figure I've got maybe 40 yrs left in me and I'd like to be able to hear for all of it.

I got a set of AM/FM ear muffs from Radio Shack and really like them. I'm a sports fanatic and can listen to ESPN all day while on the tractor, fixing fence, ect. Bugs my wife when she comes out to holler at me for dinner that I can't hear her.

I have a head set of earphones with an am/fm radio built in.I think it also has aplug in for mp3 player. My old boss made me quit wearing them at work ,because I couldnt hear anyone yelling at me. Now I use them at the range,or cutting the grass.

You haven't heard me sing have you? A dear old friend of mine lived to be 103. Would have lasted even longer if not for his doc constantly altering his regimen of meds. Anyway, clear up until about 96 or 97 years old he push mowed his own lawn, even used the bagger. Then he decided it was too much work and bought himself a "self-repelled" as he called it. lol. He continued mowing his own lawn and doing all his own chores around the house until he was 101 years old, at which time he began hiring help around the house and bought himself a riding lawn mower. Still going strong, just not quite as nimble and a little slower. The thing I noticed most was his happy go-lucky attitude. The reason I bring this up is he always sang a happy song while mowing the lawn. Great big ear to ear grin, all the time, every day. I think that's why he lived so long and stayed so young. So don't sweat your bad singing, it's all from the heart and it's very therapeutic, just let it out rather than keep it in and you'll live longer and be a lot happier. I for one, am convinced.
