Does it just shoot MOA out to 300 yards because it's never been shot at a target further than 300 yards?

Hmmmmm-

I used that one here just the other day. And that was exactly the reason. I had set targets to 300 yds and printed three inch groups.

I could make an educated guess as to the performance of said load at 500 yds. But that would not be a statement of fact.

The (admittedly slightly OCD and math-nerd) reason I hate this usage is that people try to use MOA as a measure of distance, and it's not. It's an angular measure: 1/60 of 1/60 of a degree.

1 degree = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds

Sure, it works out to just slightly over 1" @ 100 yards, but it is still just an angle. The same angle at 100 or 10,000 yards.

I think they put the extra keystroke in the word "reticule."

(It's "reticle," for anyone who's wondering.)

Yeah...but do you know why that's called a magazine?

Because it holds a collection of articles, just as a ship's magazine holds a collection of ammunition.

Seriously.

It's not an old song, it was written by Lindy Cooper Wisdom, daughter of the late Jeff Cooper, aka The Guru. It's called Grandpa's Lesson. You can read about it here; here are the words:

Pappy took to drinkin' back when I was barely three.
Ma got pretty quiet. She was frettin', you could see.

So I was sent to Grandpa and he raised me up real good.
He taught me what I oughta and he taught me what I should.

I learned a heap 'o lessons from the yarns he liked to tell.
There's one I won't forget because I learned it 'speshly well.

"There jist ain't many folk who live a peaceful, carefree life.
Along with all the good times there'll be lotsa grief and strife.

But ain't many troubles that a man cain't fix
With seven hundred dollars and a thirty ought six."

Grandpa courted Grandma near the town of old Cheyenne.
Her daddy was cantankerous - a very greedy man.

He wouldn't give permission for a fancy wedding day
'Til grandpa paid a dowry--biggest ever people say.

Her daddy softened up when Grandpa said that he could fix
Him up with seven hundred dollars and a thirty ought six.

Grandpa herded cattle down around Jalisco way.
Ended up behind some iron bars one dusty day.

Seems the local jefe craved my Grandpa's pinto mare.
Grandpa wouldn't sell her so he lit on out of there.

Didn't take much doin' 'cept a couple special tricks
plus seven hundred dollars and his thirty ought six.

Then there was that Faro game near San Francisco say.
Grandpa's cards was smokin' hot and he took all one day.

He woke up nearly naked in a ditch next early morn'.
With nothin' but his flannel shirt, and it was ripped and torn.

Those others were professionals and they don't play for kicks.
He lost seven hundred dollars and his thirty ought six.

He begged some woolen trousers off the local storekeep there
Who loaned him both a pony and a rifle on a dare.

He caught those thievin' cardsharks at another Faro game.
He got back all his property and also his good name.

He left one bleedin' badly and another mostly lame.
My grandpa's trusty rifle shoots just where you choose to aim.

Grandpa's slowin' down a bit and just the other night
He handed me his rifle and a box sealed up real tight.

He fixed me with them pale grey eyes and this is what he said,
"You're awful young but steady too and I will soon be dead.

I'll bet this here old rifle and this honest money too
Will come in mighty handy just as readily for you.

There jist ain't many folk who lead a carefree, peaceful life.
Along with times of happiness, there's always woe and strife.

But ... aint many troubles that a man cain't fix
with seven hundred dollars and his thirty ought six."

almost always wrong....but, in England, or elsewhere in the Empire, it could be right, since cordite was used in British service revolver cartridges - both the Boer War/WWI vintage .455 Webley round and the WWII-era .38/200.

so if the limey hood's gat was a Webley, the flatfoot might actually get a whiff of cordite at a murder scene.

Yeah, but Stephen Hunter used the phrase all through the book 'I, Sniper' and for someone reportedly so knowledgeable you'd think he would know better.

What? No "bang?" No recoil? No bullet leaving the barrel?

Maybe I missed it, but "high caliber" as in "The victim was shot with a high caliber rifle." Having never heard the term "low caliber" I have no idea what is intended to be conveyed by high caliber, guessing not a BB gun or rimfire. Also it seems odd that a person would be shot with a rifle rather than a bullet.

Don't have time to read the whole thread, so excuse me if these were mentioned before;

I absolutely hate people calling cartridges bullets!

I am sick and tired of hearing about platforms. The phrase is hackneyed, it's so overused. A gun is built around an action, or a mechanism.

Also tired of the overused term, weapon.

I like a handgun. I hold a shotgun in high regard, but rifles- well I love the darn things.

Unless you are a handloader or firearm engineer and must be very specific, bullets and cartridges are the same thing. So are clip and magazine. They are completely interchangeable in today's language.

Is that one of those sniper books where the hero trues up his bullets with his pocket knife? That always cracks me up.

Calling handgun grips 'stocks.' I rage extremely hard when people say that.

Calling cartridges bullets.

Calling mags clips.

One I have heard several times on the news that drives me crazy is when someone is shot with a "Caliber Gun" or "Calibered Gun".

I don't care much for Law Enforcement reporting they found an arsenal of 6 guns and more than 500 rounds of ammunition. That is about equivalent to a brick ($19.00)of 22lr and an afternoon of shooting for most teenagers around here.
