Guys, I really want one of those 9.3 x 74R Ruger #1's. I have a 9.3 x 62mm CZ 550 full stock that I really like. Love is more like it. The barrel is very short and the actual velocity suffers but it still hammers game very hard. What is your experience with the 9.3 x 74R caliber? How is the accuracy in the No. 1 and what type of velocity should I expect with a 270 gr. Speer? The Ruger has a 22" barrel and my CZ a 20.5 (I think?) Could someone here please talk me out of what I am about to spend way over a thousand bucks on with a scope, dies, etc???

I won't talk you out of it. I wanted one for a long time-missed out on the first run 2-3 years ago but got one last fall. The dies, brass, and Speer 270s had been in my reloading den for over two years before I got the rifle. It is my first #1 and an unusual calber seems right. Those big old rimmed cases are a natural for a falling block. I really don't know about accuracy-it shoots 'good enough' for my woods hunting. Here is a couple of pics-enjoy. PH

I've got it and love it, except for the trigger which I replaced with a Moyers. Mine will shoot sub MOA with Nosler 250 Accubonds, moving right at 2400+/- with 65.0 of H4350. The 270 Speers shoot OK, moving at 2300+/- with that same load.

I think I gave about $865 for mine from Bud's Gun Shop(check they are a big online business). I was lucky and really pleased with the wood-the buttstock is fantastic. I haven't really worked up a load=just sighted it in well enough to hunt with-shot about 1.5" per 3 at 100 yards. I have only tried the 270 Speers over varget. Recoil is noticable but manageable. It is a wonderful rifle. PH

Plateau Hunter, That is one beautiful rifle.

Blowtorch53,

A tad high................

Little Crow Shooting Sports in Minnesota list rifles on GunBroker.

I have bought two rifles from them, and they are good folks.

They have a 9.3x74R for sale right now that ends in 15 hours, which has been re-listed a few times, NIB. for $869.95 + $25 shipping.

It does not have as pretty wood as another that is on GB that is listed at $1050 + $45 shipping.

That's a really nice rifle. I didn't realise Ruger did a run of them in that chambering. Cool.

It's a chambering which the #1 is certainly worthy of, and vice versa. Together or apart, may they both live long.

If I was after a #1 it would be in 9.3x74R...perfect cartridge for the platform and enough heft in the rifle to make the combo work well together.

Here's a picture of mine after a day at work. I bought it unfired and NIB here on the campfire three or four years ago. It's just about my favorite for the kind of elk hunting that I do.

Thanks, Guys! It's a great old cartridge and a very nice rifle. It takes a while for an old man to figure all of this out...

My 9.3x74R No.1 has certainly become one of my all time favorite hunting rifles. A really great combo of cartridge and rifle. I run 286gr Noslers at 2350. Pretty much break action gun pressures. I'm sure the No.1 would allow one to achieve 9.3x64 Brenneke ballistics. I suspect you could push a 270 Speer to at least 2500. Not sure if the bullet would perform at high speed. Accuracy for mine is around 1-1/4" @ 100yds. Planning to working up a load with 250gr TSX's, and give them a try. Great rifle IMO.
