Hi

My 15 year old son is in the market for a 22-250. He wants a standard weight barrel in 22 or 24 inch length. Of the big makers, (Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Browning, etc.) who do you guys recommend for getting a good shooter right out of the box?

Thanks

The nod for OTB accuracy seems to favor Savage right now.

Definately Savage. Another plus is the availability of barrels that can be easily installed on the action using only an inexpensive barrel wrench and headspace gauges. The wrench is now sale priced through Midway-USA. The same headspace gauges will work for .243,.260,7mm-08,.308,and.358. They are all the same case, just necked for different diameter bullets. He could have a varmit rifle and a big game rifle for less than a higher end Remington and in all likelyhood, the Savage will outshoot the Remington and the bolt handle will not fall off!

A pard just bought a LVSF in 17Rem and reports that it is a 1/2" rifle outta the box, with the R/P Factory fodder that came with it.

All he did so far,was to adjust the trigger. He burned up all the Factory ammo(I think it came with 3 boxes)and is gonna load for it expressly now and is gonna lean on some moly coated Bergers.

My guess is,it will shoot...................(grin)

I second the LVSF. I've got two, one in .223 and one in .308. The .308 is my idea of the perfect deer rifle and the .223 is just plain fun.

You would'nt want to embarass your son by driving him to school in your bathrobe, so don't buy him anything else than a Remington 700 in LVSF.

They both shoot much better than I can, but I can't honestly give you a group size figure because I don't have the patience to shoot much paper. I get stuff sighted, confirm zero at various distances and then go to plinking. The range I usually shoot at has target backers out to 500 meters. On my last trip with the .308 I was breaking a clay bird with every shot at 300 meters and more often than not at 385 meters from the bench. I don't think you'll be dissappointed at all.

Attached is a pic of the .308 in action with a dinky little 7 point whitetail I took with in this fall at 250 yards. The two in camo are mine and the other is my cousins daughter.

I think the LVSF is a neat little package.................

I agree, it's a nice package. They even make it in 7-08. You could punch one to .223AI and get a 7-08 as a big brother to your Ti. My .308 sports a Shilen trigger, a Gre-Tan shroud/pin, Talley low alloys, a Weaver Grand Slam 3x10x40, and it's un-bedded so far. It comes in just under 7 pounds unloaded and balances on the front action screw.

Oh my <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I think I'll get one in 7/08.But back to the 22/250. An older 700 Varmint Special would be a blast but it has a heavy barrel.

I'd be for taking a very close look at the Tikka T3. I've sold a bit over 50 of them them, and with the exception of one 223 they've all shot quite well.

It is a heck of a nice rifle, smooth bolt trigger is quite good as it comes and it slicks up nicely. And they are accurate!

Mine ( I mean the one I got for my wife) shoots between the , .2's and the .7's regularily and I haven't done a thing to it except mount a scope clean it and go shoot. I might have to tune up the trigger inbetween yote and spring bruin and see what it will really do. (my buds 338 shoots awefully darn good as well)

We took 4 deer one day this fall with the 53 TX and it shoots it very good. By the way it took 4 shots and we found one of the heads. It still weighed 53 and it looks pic perfect (140 yard 1/4 to us and found bullet in the far ham)

You also could not go wrong with one of the Savages with a Accu Trigger and then also the good old 700 rem is tough to beat and can be quite accurate as well.

I'd say Tikka first followed up by the Savage and then the Rem. (if accuracy was your first concern, if looks and style were then I'd go Tikka, Rem and then Savage)

Good hunting for your sonds rifle, but do yourself and him a favor and take a close look at the Tikka. It won't let you down.

Just my thoughts on said subject.

I have a Howa in .22-250, and a Tikka in .223; both are fine rifles, very accurate and cost very little considering the quality and accuracy. I just put a Remington 700 ADL into a Remington Classic stock for my son for Christmas. I'm so impressed with it that my next rifle purchase will be a Remington Classic in 221 Fireball or .222 Remington. They're beautiful rifles and I'm crazy about CF .22's.

Another rifle no one has mentioned is a Browning. I have a Browning Medallion in .223WSSM and it is a sweet little package.

The Medallion in 22-250 has a 22" barrel and weighs about 6 1/2 lbs. The same caliber in the Micro Hunter version has a 20" barrel and weighs a few ounces less. This is a well made rifle and it's unfortunate that it's not higher on the list of most people. If you have an opportunity, take a look at them.

Mark, I'll PM you regarding your Fireball Classic.
