I think I "need" one of these. Since they have been discontinued where is the best place to get one now? Is there anything special I should know about them before buying one?

I really wish I'd have bought one when they were still made & readily available. They are heavy though as far as youth guns are concerned. My primary interest was the short barrel, as I would've put a full size butt stock on it.

The short barrel is the reason I was wanting one.

That's sure a thought. I like the new laminated stainless rifle Marlin has out now but I'd have to morgage my house to buy it.

I bought two Marlin 336Y carbines from Gander Mountain before they were discontinued by Marlin. They were on 'clearance' and I gave the second one to my daughter.
The 336Y is a "Youth" rifle, and has not just a shortened barrel, but also has a shortened butt stock, for less 'length of pull'.
It's a great little rifle and has been my "2nd rifle" Deer Hunting for the last few years. I always carry it when we leave the blinds and go walking through the brush.
Once they were gone, it seems like a lot of people miss them. Maybe if they had hung a 'catchy' name on them like "Trapper" instead of "Youth" Gun ... more people would have bought them and they'd still be making them.
Oops. The Marlin 336Y did have a "catchy" name, "Spikehorn" ... Not catchy enough, I guess.

Spikehorns show up every now and again on GB or message boards, and I have picked up 3 over the last few years. Two went to friends with kids starting to hunt, and one is locked away in my safe for my daughter to use in a couple of years.

This a another option ,one I opted for as a light tote'n carbine a 16in barreled Puma mine is a 357 Mag.. a good round out of a levergun for deer ,black bear ,hawgs and such Also great for 2 legged predators ..mine is loaded setting in the corner with 125 gr. HP ...is a heck of a self defense combo

Synthetic youth ramline stocks on the way along with a burris fastfire for now! I think I might do a little pseudo build along as I tweak this little baby...

You forgot to mention the rare left handed ejection and loading ports.
