Just bought a Rem 700 XCR in 7mm-08 and wanted to know where to start. This will be a whitetail / antelope rifle. Thanks

My son's Ruger Hawkeye likes 45 grs. of Varget with 120 gr. Ballistic Tips. Works really well on whitetail deer.
Oh, and that's in Win. brass with Fed210M primers.

41 grains of Varget pushing a 140 grain Ballistic Tip, in Rem brass and with WLR primers.
Shoots wonderfully and kills deer cleanly.

Since I get great performance with H-414 and 140 gn Partitions in 7x57 rifles, I just scaled that load down for the 7-08 I just bought. 47.0 gns of H-414 in the 7x57 is my go-to load, so I just did a ratio of case capacities and settled on 45.0 gns for the 7-08. First range session with the 7-08, the rifle shot a 3 shot, 1/2" group. I quit looking further for a Deer load. I used a Weaver V-16 set at 16x for the load testing. While I was doing the load developing, I wanted a varmint load for the 7-08 too, using the 100 gn Sierra HPBT. 42.0 gns of Varget with that bullet shot a similar 1/2" group. Fed 210's were the primers. That was the quickest load development for any rifle I've ever bought, one range session.

I'm looking at the 7/08 I put together on a Savage action...
I'm going to redo another rifle differently, chambered in the 7/08... but I am looking at a 154 grain RN at about 2400 fps will certainly be an ideal package for the 200 yds and under woods ranges that I typically hunt at...
and that is not far off what the M1 Garand was originally designed as in the guise of the 276 Pedersen.....
just wish Hornady still made a 129 and 140 grain RN in 6.5 mm still...
