Turrets work with 100% precision,no matter what the power setting on a variable. They work in any atmosphere, with any load combo and there has yet to be an invent that can rival their repeatable high precision.
Several times the other posters have said that stadia or other holdovers like dots or hash marks need max magnification to work. Not true. For quite a while I have just used the plex point as a holdover reference and usually see the MOA change by looking at a calabrated target at 100 yds. Usually pick two magnifications like 10 and 16.
Last year had a great shot on a slow walking deer with no time to even range it. Knew the rifle well, a 284. Thought for a few seconds and then laid down with the bi-pod and put the plex pt of the old vari X II on 9 X on the upper third of his body, lead sufficiently and down it went. How about 451 yds? Read it after the fact.
Perhaps an important fact that is implied but not said yet is familarity with the rig, regardless of the way we go about the longer shots.
FYI thanks Big Stick for mentioning the deal on the 3.5-10 tactical closeout at Bear Basin. Got one to play with with and learn the nuances of turrret turning. Will be on a light 6.5-284 for varminting in the desert.
This is a great thread worth putting in the documents file for reference.
Stick, I have been thinking about putting turrets on my scopes, but much of my hunting is done using horses. Therefore, my rifles get beat up quite a bit and they get shoved in and out of scabbards. Is this a problem with turrets? Are their low profile turrets or some other form of turret that can handle a bunch of abuse?
Hell,I wouldn't even know what a horse scabbard looks like,so couldn't even venture a guess.
I can offer that I take turrets with me,everywhere I go and there are bumps and bruises along the way. A standard target turret and it's cover, protrude 1.5" from the scope's body. That isn't a helluva lot of surface area to get in the road.
The M3 turret is smaller in stature, but not readily available on 1" tubes(I've only seen 'em once on a 1" Leupie).
I can't savvy the modest projection, bringing things to an abrupt halt for you.........................

Thanks Stick. I think it is worth a shot. I have a few vx III's that I am going to send to OR for an overhaul. I think I will pack the foxtrotters this summer with a few guns and see what happens. With my luck one of the horses will do a roll .........wouldn't be the first time.
Anyone have any experience with the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x? Though not a leupold, if the quality is as good as the rest of the 3200s, this thing is a heck of a bargain.....

Leupold VHR has worked very well for me on coyotes, fox and crows out to 400yds this year. I find it extremely quick. The only cranking I need to do is on the parralax for focus. I replaced a 3 year old Burris Ballistic Mildot with the VHR last March. Now I have a nice Burris boat anchor that I can't seem to get rid of. The jury is still out on this one but I'm still working on the TDS, B&C and B-Plex. Planned on using the B&C on my 270 for some long range deer hunting but I had a buck sneak in behind me at 70yds crosshairs work, but I haven't seen a live target out at the 300yd marker bar. Ditto with the TDS on my 25-06, shot a yearling doe at 30yds. She was standing under me at 12ft but I had to let her get out there before I could see her in the scope. SPAD
I have a 10x 3200 on my .223 M77 MKII. I like it. clicks are solid and repeatable, at least out to the 338 yards I checked it to. Point-blank got me very close with my load information. Optics are very good, mil-dot seems to be pretty close in my informal testing. IMO it's a good buy. Some people might not like the large turrets, but I have found them to not be a problem at all. As a precaution I printed my zero on a small piece of paper and stuck it to the side of my rear scope bell. A quick glance confirms my zero and I'm in business.
Anything sticking up 1.5 inch from the scope tube is not going to be worth a [bleep] in a scabbord . If you really want to spin knobs and need to carry in a scabbord , i'd go with something that just has standard height finger turnable turrents .
I carry mine in a gun boot on the 4-wheeler. The turrets are a really tight fit. I had to trade my M3 off cause they were always moving in the boot Where do you guys tape your click dope. Here's mine
Appreciate the input. Ended up with a Vari-X III 3.5 - 10x Tactical that was on closeout. Nice scope. I like it.......
