I have a 300 savage and below the serial #at the hinge lever there is a M stamped on it. On the savage site I do not see a model with an M. My serial # starts in the 285*** . It is a take down model. What would this M mean?

It's an inspectors marking. If your rifle isn't an A series, which it isn't due to the T/D feature, your serial number means it's older than when the lever boss code started.

Explain your rifle, caliber, barrel length, etc... we can figure it out.

It has a pistol grip stock with fine checkering and the front has a delicate schnoble with checkering. Caliber is 300 and the barrel lenght is 24" . Front site looks like a short bead in integral base and rear is a King. There is a drill hole just above the screw on the lever, which is where the M is. My 250/3000 does not have the drill hole in it and it is in the #318*** and has a G.

DTV, my 250/3000 T/D is pretty much as you described your 300. Ser # 330***. No extra holes, but it has a M (no oval) on the lever just above the screw. Dean

Your rifle is a Model G, made in 1926 right before they went to the ramp front sight. The "drill hole" is not factory. The "M" is just an inspectors mark. Does your rifle have the high luster blue finish?

Savage...never say "never".
