Anyone have any experience with these in either 38 Spl/110 gr or 380/90 gr??

experience as in "shot a guy and buried the body?" NO.


But I've run a box through my wife's 380, and a box in my 380 and I currently have some in the clip. (or is it a magazine)


Fired fine, no jams or misfeeds. Accuracy was good at 7 yards.

F'd up the cedar post I was shooting at fairly nicely.

Was sort of hoping for some documented "goblin down" reports

I carry them in my 1911 and a Colt .380. I've never shot a living creature with them, but have done some penetration testing. My tests consisted of placing a water saturated Denver phone book in front of a stump with a water filled gallon jug in front of that. Needless to say, the .45 acp was impressive, with complete penetration, but the .380 was far better than I expected. It made it through the jug, and about 2/3rds the way through the phone book.

Gave me a bit more confidence in the .380.

My friend with me that day tested his .38 with the 110 grn. Hydra Shocks in the same media. They busted the water jug pretty well, and penetrated the phone book to around 3/4 of it's thickness. Pretty bad ass little bullet!

I did dispatch a goat for my Dad, using one, but it was vaguely mafia-esque.

I hope that few of us "have any experience" with needing to shoot in self defense. Predators prefer unarmed victims. They're bad for business. So I hope that showing intent to defend will dissuade a criminal after me. But if I have to shoot I will. I already made that decison to survive.

This was fired into water filled milk jugs from 8 ft.


It equalled the number of jugs penetrated by a couple of 38 Specials.

It's two generations old and they often plug and fail when they hit jackets or denim. HST, Ranger-T and Gold Dot are better choices.

Additionally I would only use hardball in .380 and .32.

We ran some tests last summer into wet newspaper and used a 10 x 10 denim patch and leather patch over top the wet newspaper in one of the tests. We used several types of "self-defense" ammo also. Cor-Bon, Pow R Ball, Hornady, Federal and Winchester.

Our overall view of the .380-auto and .38-spl was not very good in comparison to the other calibers tested: 9mm Luger, .40calS&W, .45acp and 10mm. The 10mm stole the show no doubt and the above rest of the calibers were good to go and I would feel confident in carrying them with this ammo tested, except the HORNADY which had problems going BANG!!!

Our .380-auto only penetrated 3 inches into that wet newspaper going through the denim or the leather. I suspect hardball ammo would have done a better job in that respect. However, we had no ammo to make that test conclusive. In comparison the 9mm Luger penetrated almost twice as deep in the media, using Cor-Bon ammo or the Pow R Ball ammo.
