Have a 7 month old lab/mutt mix and I'm debating on whether or not to get him neutered. He's not wild and not aggressive. I'm not really planning on using him for hunting, just have him as a pal.
What do you guys think about it?

Thanks Ingwe, I was hoping you'd weigh in.
Chesty Puller looks like a fine pup as well. Someone will be very lucky.

Ingwe - I'm aware of the health issues that a female can run into if not fixed. What are the issues with a male?

I'm not Ingwe but we do share more than a passing physical resemblance... See this link for a discussion on neutering and pet health issues: http://vetmed.illinois.edu/petcolumns/index.cfm?function=showarticle&id=502

Ingwe Yeah, look how healthy Ingwe is... In all seriousness, is the current recommendation to alter them early, or let 'em grow a pair, so to speak, and alter at a bit older age?

Neuter. Had a pal, an Apso, that was unaltered. Lost him to urinary tract, probably prostate, cancer. Neutering may have prevented that and I may have enjoyed his company a couple years longer.
Not to mention his marking habits. He knew better but sometimes instinct would make him oblivious to what he was doing. But when corrected in the act the "Oh crap, what am I doing!!" look he got was hilarious.

Which explains a lot.
