Hi,recently went into a wal-mart and saw they had the Federal Power Shock 150 and 180 grain 30-06 ammo for sale at $13.50 a box and was just wondering if anyone had used thes and if they were very accurate and got the velocity they claim (2900 fps) for the 150.I am thinking about picking up 4 or 5 boxws for deer hunting with an Interarms Mark x Mannlicher (20 inch barrel) thanks,Craig

I often test new rifles with whatevers cheap at walmart, the federal power shock has shot well in my .270 win and in a .308, for its price. Cant comment on the velocity though.

I clocked some of the 180 gr. stuff in a rifle of mine that is usually a little slow. It went 2750 fps. I don't remember anything especially good or bad about the accuracy.

I use them for hunting all the time. Drops deer and elk dead on their tracks, same thing with remington core-lokt.

I've run a bunch of them in 243 and 308 and 270 with nothing but good results in both accuracy and bullet performance.

You mean you can actually buy ammunition that is all stuck together and ready to go in a box? What will they think of next? Prolly start sellin cakes that are already baked and iced. Interesting times we're living in. laugh

Factory loaded ammo in the Federal boxes has always been accurate for me, though I shoot very little factory fodder. (Like maybe one box every 10 years. blush )

I shoot the 180 grain in my Sakos. Accuracy is much better than Remington's green PSPCL ammo.

Its a good load for deer for sure. I have killed quite a few deer using the 150 grain version. I get really good groups when I use them and they are consistent, from lot to lot. I do not know their exact speed, but it works perfectly for me. I do think the bullet is a tad on the soft side judging from the deer I've shot and the few bullets that I've recovered,so I'd recommend it for deer only. I have shot deer from 20 yards out to 350 yards with them and usually I get a quarter sized exit wound and much bigger if you hit a bone such as a shoulder. Its been my go to load for deer hunting for awhile now. I started reloading a few months ago and I am barely beating the accuracy of this load with my reloads so I'm having a hard time justifying reloading since the price is so cheap on those Power Shoks.

bcraig,

From your rifle the load will probably get around 2800 fps, which is just perfect for a cup-and-core 150 from a .30-06 for most hunting, especially deer.

In fact in most factory rifles, most 150-grain .30-06 ammo will get 2800-2900 fps, which shoots flat enough for most hunting, yet isn't so fast that the bullets will come apart. It also doesn't kick all the much. All are reasons the .30-06 works so well.

Hi,thanks guys for the information, went and picked up 5 boxes of the 150 grain.Funny thing happened at wal-mart,young boy behind counter told me that federal ammo was no good and to stick with the Remington core Lockts !After a little conversation with him come to find out all he had ever shot was one 22 rimfire with Federal ammo and he just felt like the rifle would have been more accurate with Remington !!! Never even shot a centerfire !! Oh well I am sure he was trying to help !thanks,Craig

I usually shoot some factory ammo in whatever new rifle I get to establish a safe velocity baseline to aim for with my handloads.

I was quite frankly astonished when I got my first 24" barrel .270WCF and fired some Federal Power Shok 130 grains through the screens.

3240 fps and less than 10 fps extreme spread for 10 rounds! Accuracy was good enough that I briefly considered not even loading any .270WCF that season and just using the Federal Blue Box.

Federal Blue Box 180's have killed my bucks 2 of the last 3 years.

Haven't clocked them either, but wouldn't be at all surprised if they showed little variations in speed. They're very accurate from my rifle for me.

Guys at the range are astonished that someone can shoot groups so tight with only a 4x scope too. I think it's more a matter of what you're comfortable with than anything else. And, for the record, these guys aren't snipers either, so take it for what it's worth.

You might buy one box and see how they shoot in your rifle before buying 5. Some rifles are finicky. That said, the Power Shock's have been very accurate for me in a .270 - three shots can be covered with a dime at 100 when I do my part. I killed two spike whitetails with two shots one evening last deer season with them. Both were about 90 yards away and hit just behind the shoulder about a third of the way up the body. Both ran about 5 yards and dropped. They work on deer.

I'd sure like to know that answer to that, as well as what they run in the 243, 270 and 308!

Anybody know any more on the bullets they use?

Seeing as how the parent company of both Federal and Speer are the same I'd bet on them being Speer.
Just a WAG though.

Its hard to go wrong with Federal Ammo... Impossible to beat the blue box for the price. Filled many freezers with it in a lot of diff guns and cartridges.
