ok this is kind of a fallow up post to my other thread.
i think i have been talked out of ruining a perfectly good 722 in 257bob....i can pick up a remmy 721 in 30-06 and luepold scope for next to nothing.
i have a great deal on a 24" mountain contour barrel in 257bob. and a model 700 stock already.
so will 257bob work on a long action remmy 721?

If you are planning on running 117 to 120gr bullets, lengthen the throat and load to a longer overall length to pick up powder space and resulting velocity. The biggest mistake with the 257 Roberts was being designed for the short action bolt guns. Bolt face/rim size will be the same.

what about the bolt face? It's an '06? Simple rebarrel, and you're in business.

Actually, a few M721s in .257 Roberts were made by Remington, I have never handled one, but Im sure they are out there.

Remington has chambered the 257 Rob in both short and long actions. I had a 722 in 257 a few years back...and a 700 Mountain Rifle in 257, also a short action..but the 700 Classic in 257 Rob was built on a long action. The 721 will work without modification.

I've heard tell that back when 721's and 722's were in production, that guys would just remove a 722/257 barrel, and install it on a 721 action, so they could have the Bob in a long action. Headspacing, and iron sight alignment were the issues in doing the swap. I have a 722 in 257 that is super accurate now, so I have no plans of altering a perfectly good rifle.

The biggest mistake with the 257 Roberts was being designed for the short action bolt guns. I don't think Remington was looking that far into the future. For the first 14 or so years after introduction in 1934, the 257 was only available in magnum length actions. Those were the Remington Model 30 and Winchester Models 54 and 70. It wasn't put into a short action until 1948 in the Remington 722. Bruce
