I like to use MPBR with a 6" kill zone (+/-3")for all of my hunting rifles.

A 300yd zero works real well on a 308 if you have a mildot scope on it. 1st dot above the crosshairs is good at 200, 2nd good at 100. 1st one below is good at 400. After that I prefer to dial in the proper corrections.

In practice with my .270 Win it works out to 3.1 inches high at 100 yds, 3.8 at 200 yds, and ZERO at 300 shooting 130 gr eTips at 3200 fps. Ending 5 low at 365 yards.
I tried it but went back to 200 yd zero after looking at my notes over 85% of my kills were 200-220 yards the last couple of years so for me 200 zero is more reasonable.

I sight everything, from big, fast magnums to my .270 as nsaqam suggests. With very few exceptions most elk are shot within 300 yards, and most within 200. I can guess pretty well if an elk is within that range and then hold dead on. Beyond that I use a laser range finder and computer generated ballistics charts that are formulated with the use of a chronograph and then field tested.

Yeah buddy! The 300 yard zero is great, particularly with the faster moving bullets - as tossed from my .25-06 or 7mm Rem mag... Over the past five years with the .25-06 and a 300 yard zero, I've zapped five mulies from 30 - 400 yards, crosshairs were on hair for every shot.

My scopes are nominally zeroed at 100 yards, but clicking up to a 200 or 300 yard zero in the field is, obviously, very easy.
I like the nominal hundred yard zero for several reasons.
If you are clicking your scope around, zero is just one more number on the chart...
