Download and read the PDF, it could help you on your social security. If you served on active duty between January 1957 - December 2001, you are eligible for increased Social Security benefits once you are authorized to begin drawing social security benefits ... however, you must formally apply for the increase by taking your DD Form 214 to your local Social Security office. Details are in the attachment.

I got this from the VA Legal rep here at Evans Army Hospital. Who says all VA personnel are scumbags.

Thanks Les. Can't view it at work so I'll check it at home.

Les, thanks for the heads up. The only problem is I don't know where my DD 214 is although it's recorded in Duval County, FL public records and with the VA.

I wonder if my military I.D. will work as I am a 100% DAV.

I wonder if I'll still be able to buy a case of beer with 25 bucks 25 years from now?

The VA can get you a copy Archie, just go see the local rep.

When I went in for my records review, the very nice (really!) lady at the SocSec office asked me if I had a DD214 and made sure I got the extra. It worked out to about $100 a month, I believe. That keeps me in booze!

BTW, do compute if it's better for you to start drawing benefits at 60 or wait until your normal/full retirement age. It's almost always wiser to begin drawing sooner (which is why the Gummerbunk encourages you to wait!)

Figure your monthly benefit and multiply that by the number of months between age 60 and your full retire age. Then take that total and compute how many months the higher payment would take to break even.

Example: Your monthly draw at age 60 is $1100, or $1550 if you wait until age 66. In the 72 months between 60 and 66, you'll draw $79,200. The $450 extra if you wait until 66 means it will take you 176 months (14 years, eight months) to break even. Unless you live until age 81, therefore, it is much smarter to start taking SS at age 60. Plus, you have to assume that there be anything to draw at all for that many years.

I started the minute I was eligible.

Social Security Online

Special Extra Earnings for Military Service

Since 1957, if you had military service earnings for active duty (including active duty for training), you paid Social Security taxes on those earnings. Since 1988, inactive duty service in the Armed Forces reserves (such as weekend drills) has also been covered by Social Security.

Under certain circumstances, special extra earnings for your military service from 1957 through 2001 can be credited to your record for Social Security purposes. These extra earnings credits may help you qualify for Social Security or increase the amount of your Social Security benefit.

Special extra earnings credits are granted for periods of active duty or active duty for training. Special extra earnings credits are not granted for inactive duty training.

If your active military service occurred

* From 1957 through 1967, we will add the extra credits to your record when you apply for Social Security benefits.
* From 1968 through 2001, you do not need to do anything to receive these extra credits. The credits were automatically added to your record.
* After 2001, there are no special extra earnings credits for military service.

How You Get Credit For Special Extra Earnings

The information that follows applies only to active duty military service earnings from 1957 through 2001. Here's how the special extra earnings are credited on your record:

Service in 1957 Through 1977

You are credited with $300 in additional earnings for each calendar quarter in which you received active duty basic pay.

Service in 1978 through 2001

For every $300 in active duty basic pay, you are credited with an additional $100 in earnings up to a maximum of $1,200 a year. If you enlisted after September 7, 1980, and didn't complete at least 24 months of active duty or your full tour, you may not be able to receive the additional earnings. Check with Social Security for details.

That's a fact Jack you will get added SS benefits for active duty. I got more for my six months active duty for training (basic and MOS). Just had to produce DD214.
