I've opened this post a few more times today and am continually impressed with the critter but even more happy you had such an optimistic guide. Attitude is EVERYTHING in life.

Way to go, brown bear have got to be one of the finest trophies in the world. Your bear is awesome, and I'm sure you will have a lifetime of fine memories every time you look at the final mount. Well done, Wade

Cope, Super nice bear. Kodiak can be a nasty place and your perspective on attitude is refreshing and so true. Glad you had a great guide who stayed positive all the way. Definitely paid off!! How tough is an animal that absorbs 5 300 grain Partitians out of a 375 inside 125 yards? WOW.

Congratulations! I lived that dream in 2001. A dream that I thought I'd never see come true. I get those chills of fullfillment just reading your story. Dennis Harms is good people. He was on my short list. Congrats on acheiving what most will only dream of. Simply Superb. Thank you.

Yep, very nice bear and hunt! Wouldn't have thought it possible, given the 'blue tape' handicap.

Fantastic bear, and great post. Nice to see such a fine animal, taken by someone who appreciates it, which you obviously do. Congratulations!
Jeff I sure do. Especially appreciate how amazingly capable those bears are in that rugged environment. They truly own those mountains. Not only are they perfect killing machines, but they climb up and around the steepest, coldest, nastiest terrain you can imagine like it's nothing. When we were taking the pictures of the bear, I felt almost guilty about taking the life of such a beautiful animal. The biologist estimated him at 8-10 years old, which is pretty young. I can't imagine what that bear would have looked like in another 5 or 10 years. I felt better when he explained that taking the big boars helps cub mortality and the population grow. They really are impressive to watch! Once again, I applaud your outlook on the hunt! That bear died well! Jeff

Dave Incredibly tough! You know how when the adrenaline is flowing things slow down, but it's kind of a blur in retrospect? I've tried to replay each of my shots over in my head but its foggy. I know my first shot was good, through the vitals. My last shot was through the vitals when he was almost on the beach. The ones in the middle are fuzzy and I can't account for two bullets. When we skinned him, he had two through the vitals, one high through the midsection, and two through the rear quarters. After the first shot, when he hunched and started moving and bringing his head back toward the hit, I didn't want to hit him in the head, so I aimed for his rear hips thinking it would be good to break him down. That probably wasn't the best thing to do, and it wasn't premeditated, but those three shots did eventually put him on his belly. After taking four shots, he was still lifting his upper body up and made his way to the beach when I had another clear shot to the front shoulders. You could hear a very loud "whop" sound when the bullets would hit. It was scary how tough he was. Can't imagine trying to stop one up close with one or two shots.

That is one big bad-ass bear. Thanks for sharing that very cool story and pics.
Curious, what was your guide carrying for a back up?

Cope, the word "congratulations" doesn't even do justice, that is a phenomenal bear! That is the "dream hunt" that I hope to go on someday.
