Building a 270 Win on an FN action, trying to decide which barrel Kreiger or Walther.
Is there any real difference between the two?

Not sure about the LW, but Kreiger is running at 18-20 weeks for delivery. Are you in a hurry?

Krieger would be my choice, but if i was building it would be Hart or Shilen

Kreiger, Bartlein, and Brux would be my top choices right now.

Bartlien says leadtimes are as "little" as 8 months and possibly up to a year!!!!

Kreiger barrels are fine barrels. We have three of them. Lother Walther has them threaded and chambered for your FN and they are very good. We have one of them so far. wink

My one LW is a great barrel, easily bests my small collection of Douglas and Pac-Nor. Don't have a Kreiger yet.

Krieger is cut rifled, Walther is buttoned. I have some of each and they're all good. I have barrels from 12-14 different custom makers and of them all, a Walther in 22-250AI is the best.

No experience with Krieger's barrels other than .308 Win; for that cartridge we called them "high master" barrels because you had to shoot in the HM class to observe the full benefits of the barrel.

My Lothar Walther are all hunting rifle barrels, and they are accurate and mine shoot to the same point of impact.

Both are good outfits to buy from, but I would say an LW barrel would match your FN action. wink

You won't see a LW barrel on any of my rifles.

FWIW, I don't mess around all that much with different makers, but when I want a rifle to shoot, I have chosen Kriegers and I have never been disappointed.

I am just curious how many you have had on your rifles, and what did you find that was wrong with them?

Way back when Jeff Hicks was building rifles, he used LW quite a bit. (Not commenting on his business practice or the type on man he is but he could build a shootin rifle for sure).

I was at his place and asked him and Clay what/why etc and he said that while the steel was a bit different than other barrel makers (harder on tooling and required a higher speed I believe) he was very happy with the accuracy results he got with them, once he learned how to work with its differences.

Now don't quote me on that, word for word, this was several years ago but the gist was that LW barrels required some different practices to cut/chamber. Once he figured that out - he used them quite a bit as they met his accuracy requirements.

FWIW, YMMV, yadda yadda yadda...

Teal and WRF,
They have a SS barrel that machines like 17-4. The problem is not about getting a good job. It is hard to find one that is good dimensionally. The 3 that I chambered just wouldn't shoot. I could go on but it wouldn't solve anything.

Butch - I wasn't saying anything about your rifles, it's just that Jeff was the only guy I can remember that really doted on LW barrels.

Ray Atkins says he uses them. MColeman has mentioned using a few and having to machine them differently also.

Everything you now do is something you have chosen to do. Some people don't want to believe that. But if you're over age twenty-one, your life is what you're making of it. To change your life, you need to change your priorities.
