I just returned from a range session with my Remington 788 in .222 Remington. I have not shot it in about 20 years. I have an opportunity to do some ground squirrel/rock chuck hunting so I thought I would resurrect the old gun to take along. I don't have a digital camera so I can't post any pictures.

Rifle was a "bargain basement" type deal. Scope is a long discontinued Tasco 8 X 32. Purchased in Ontario, Oregon in 1974. Used it to great effect on local varmints, mostly with factory loads. Got into loading my own after shooting up over 400 rounds of factory stuff one weekend.

I used some old handloads from years back. Hornady 50 gr. SX, 20 gr. IMR 4198, CCI 400 primers, and Remington brass.

First hundred yard group was 1.183" X .473", next was .637" X .617", followed by .824" X .580", last was .663" X .379". These were 4 shot groups. Why 4 shots? The 788 has a 4 shot clip.

Although not the greatest groups....I think I'll keep it!

My Remington 700 VLS printed a .210" three shot group at 100 yards, which is my best group to date

Nice group, but I have to question as to how you measure your groups.Did you measure the actual holes in the paper,or did you measure to the discolored marks that are seen around the hole? The bullet often stretches the paper, with the resulting holes being smaller than the bullet diameter. In that case, you must measure to the outside of the mark that the bullet left on the paper.

Below is a group that I just fired with my own .223.I measure the group at .240".The smallest inner bullseye is 1/2".
