Hell, i like them both but i have much more love for the 223AI than anything else it seems. i've 4 right now with 2 more waiting in the wings to get punched out and one sako vixen that's staying a vanilla 223.
I've only two 22-250's one AI'ed, i like them well enough but if i were building another it'd be a 223AI. I've 5 223AIs...and all the parts for another...

I shoot a reg 223 and a 22-250AI For my 2 cents on them it comes down to barrel life for me. I had the 22-250 done in a 1:8 twist so I can shoot 80 grain bullets at longer range. The 223 is the is in a 1:9 and I shoot 69, and 70 grain bullets in it. The 223 has over 4000 rounds down it and it still shot 3/4" 3 shoots at 200 yards just last week. The 22-250AI is on its second barrel and it tends to shoot over 1 MOA at about 2000 rounds. If I was going to shoot mostly under 400 yards I would just use my 223.A 223 should own the ground out to 400 yards. A 223 lets you shoot much more so you can get to know your gun better. If you want to really hit what you are shooting at there is no substitute for trigger time and the 223 lets you get lots of it. The 22-250 A.I I use when I want to kill something. Where I hunt we can use it on deer and it carries a 1000 ft/bls out to 450 yards, with an 80gr vld, so it works very well on them. I took a coyote at 630 yards this winter and more than a few at 500yards with it. For me it just comes down to what you are looking for out of the gun. If I was not going to shoot bullets over 60 grain I would not bother with anything faster than a 1:12 so if yours is a 1:9 I would advise that which ever way you go you try heavier 224 bullets. Also remember after about 400 yards your range finder becomes almost as important as your gun if you want to hit something.

I've played a bit with most of them, and am down to just a 223AI now. If you are serious about 400 yards being the limit, I'd just go with the standard 223.
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

I would go with the 223 based on what you have. 22-250 is nice but you can't beat the cheap brass for the 223 for me at least.
