I'll be the first to post, "35 Whelen"!
I'm betting I won't be the last.
Or... anything from .284 caliber up, with a family connection to it.

I'll go real far out & say the .375 H&H. It doesn't destroy as much meat as my .300 did & I have killed deer with it past 350 yards. You can do 40 rounds per session but 25 is about the upper limit of what I enjoy.

Deer/elk to 300 yds, shooting up to 40 rounds per session. Zeesh there's a ton of rounds that would do fine for this.
I'd find a gun that you like the feel of and then look for one of the following rounds to be chambered in it.
7/08 308 270 280 06 Swede

I've hunted all over North America mostly with some sort of 300 magnum. I've taken, wt deer, mulies, antelope, elk, moose, caribou, sheep, black bear, & grizzlies with various 300 magnums from 40 yards to well over 400. If you use good bullets they flat out get it done. I now use a 300 WSM pushin 165 Accubonds for most of my deer hunting and a 300 RUM with 180-200 Accubonds or Partitions for the bigger stuff. I have a 300 Win for in betweeners!! 163bc Exactly where I'm at as well. I always run 1 rifle for everything, and after using a .300 RUM with 200 g Accubonds for years I just swapped it for a new X-Bolt in .300 WSM built with the exact same mods at Rocky Mountain Rifles.

Dober Ditto dat!....it's the 40 rounds per session that makes these great choices.....40 rounds behind a big 30 in one afternoon gives me the creeps....I would rather watch re-runs of "All My Children"
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

I'm with Dober and Bob, with the .30-06 at the high end of the scale.
To quote my old friend Phil Shoemaker (.458Win on the Camfire): "Anybody who claims the .30-06 isn't enough for general big game hunting is unwittingly commenting on their own lack of marksmanship."

Well I would recommend the .300 Wby. as the ideal choice for an all-around caliber, but you added the 'fun to shoot 40 rounds' thing...
In which case, my recommendation would have to be the .280 Rem. Yeah, I know, it's near obsolete, hardly anyone chambers for it, etc.- but for ease of shooting and maximum results, it is very hard to beat.

I could live with my 30-06 very nicely.

Lower 48? 30-06.
Make it a Model 70 Featherweight or a 700 Mountain Rifle (old BDL version) and you'll do it in style.

I had only had single shot centerfires till I was 44, when I got a 30'06 in a 54 that was bought in 29 by the seller.
A year later I got a BRNO 602 in 375 H and H.
I can shoot either one all day long, both built to shoot comfortably, the 375 with a recoil pad.
If I had to keep just one, I would lie and keep both.
But truth be told I shoot the 375 the most. I just like the feel of it.

I'd want something with a little less in the recoil department, so 30-06 on down.
I think the 308 would be tough to beat. I wouldn't mind a 243 myself but that would be light on elk I suppose.

30-06 300 WSM 300 Win Magnum would be the 3 chamberings I'd look at.
