If a 30-30 shoots about 2-2.5 inches high at 50 yards, ( rear sight lowered all the way), with 150 grain factory ammo. How will it shoot at 100 yards.

It'll be even higher, about 3.5". Sounds like you need a higher front sight.

Formula for that is:

sight radius x error / distance to target. All values in inches.

The answer would represent how much higher, in thousandths of an inch, your new front sight should be.

Thanks, I did not get time to try it at 100 yards. I guess I saved time and ammo.

Its fun to speculate and do a few mathamatical calculations,
But, IMHO You need real world specifics, that only comes from You shooting Your rifle at said ranges first from sand-bag benchrest, then from shootin sticks.
Theres a world of variables in bore/groove diameters, barrel lenghts, and lot to lot consistencies in factory ammo as well as different brands of said ammo, all will effect velocity.
I realize were not talking about a long range target type accuracy w/ the 30/30 but, knowing what YOUR rifle will do at a given range will be that much sweeter when You place an accurate solid hit on a fat buck or doe this fall.
I shoot an old long octagon brl 30/30 Winchester w/ handloaded 170 partitions and a peep, nothin finer than a buck or hog shuddering hard and hittin the leaves from a well placed shot from that cool old rifle.
Good Luck and Good Shootin. Gunner

I had to do that very thing with my M94 when I installed a Williams FP on it. Mine ended up about 4" high at 100 yards, so I ordered a front sight that was taller than the formula called for, so as to put the rear sight up off the bottom of it's range in the event I wanted to change loads.

The recommendations I gave are from experience, and I routinely shoot that particular .30-30 out to 200 yards. The longest "meat" shot with it is 236 yards.

I have one like that with a peep site. I tried 170 grain bullets and it calmed the groups right down into the bulls eye. Try that first. By the way, I've shot deer with both 150's and 170 grain 30-30 rounds and I don't think those deer could tell the difference.

No, he didn't buy his rifle from me. It's still in the safe and not gonna go anywhere.

I have one that I had experienced the same thing with, and that's how I solved it. I have a feeling the same thing might help with his situation.

XS Sights sells little plastic front sight test posts that can be pressed into a standard 3/8ths sight dovetail. You just trim until you get your zero, then measure the resulting length of the post and order the correct height front sight. Zero guesswork. The best front sights are also the square topped blade with a vertical white stripe, also from XS Sights.

Good recommendation there. I already have all of my levers equipped with Williams receiver sights, but if (when) I buy another one, I'm gonna try the XS sights. I hear good things about 'em.
