I just got my Mossberg 500 mounted up with a Mossberg cantilevered base rifled slug barrel. I put on a Burris short mag 2-7x scope and went to the range with Wolf 1 ounce slugs. Well, I sighted it in at 50 yards but it doesn't seem very accurate with this brand of slugs. I seem to recall the smooth bore barrel actually shooting these more accurately. So I was just looking for some suggestions on what brand of slugs are reasonably accurate out to 100 yards? I would like to keep three shots inside of 5 inches or so.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Our very own "ELK" John Haviland just wrote an excellent article in the current HANDLOADER magazine about reloading slugs!
I would suggest for economy sake if you load shotshells check it out!
If I were buying slugs to shoot in a rifled barrel I believe the saboted slugs are supposed to shoot better in them.
I just rec'd my new to me, used fully rifled, iron sighted 870 barrel and 100 ballistic products dangerous game slugs to try out loads for an all around, foul weather, deer getter!

The best results from fully rifled barrels almost always come from Sabot type slugs as opposed to the older Foster style.
On top of that, Fosters are a bugger to clean up after in rifled barrels......

Thanks for the responses. I have been told by a friend not to use Foster style slugs although he did say Brenneke slugs are okay since they use special wadding. I have gotten in a box of sabot style slugs to try but I am thinking of trying some of the Dixie slugs that are made for rifled barrels. Anyone have any experience with the Dixie slugs? They are supposed to be hardened lead and made solely for rifled barrels. As for leading of the rifled barrel with Foster style slugs I can say that definitely happens. I fired 12 Foster style slugs (Wolf 1 ounce slugs) through my Mossberg's factory rifled barrel and there is extensive leading. I am sure it will be a joy to remove.

I have no experience with Dixie, but I can say that Brenneke makes several types of slugs. Some are built specifically for rifled barrels and some are not. Just keep that in mind when buying them. I have had great results with Winchester Plantum Tips and Federal Barnes Xpanders in my slug guns. Several friends have had good results with Lightfields too. Each barrel will be totally different though!

I have a 500 in 20ga. I tried a few different sabot "speed" slugs. Ya know, the faster the better thinking. I couldn't group for crap. So I said hell with it and tried Rem. 2 3/4 buckhammer slugs. Bam, awesome. I don't know if its the right combo of twist, speed and weight (very heavy slugs). But with buckhammers I can group 5 shots into a baseball size at 100 yds. Which you're not missing anything within 20 gauge range with groups like that. Try Buckhammers.
