I plan on handling a few different ones at my local gun shop, I don't too many people locally with a 375, so shooting different ones isn't very likely. I do know I want a CRF, not light weight and decent iron sights. The Remington 798 I shot had all these features, but by no means am I making my mind up just yet. I was shooting the federal factory 270gr loads, about 2700fps. I feel pretty good about being able to handle the higher loads, as that same day I shot a 416 Rigby with mid level (for the rigby) loads, right at 58ftbls recoil. And I have a good history with the 45/70 and stiff loaded heavy hardcast bullets.

I use my 375 for everything. I had it built as a "do everything" rifle, and that is pretty much what it does. Just under 10lbs, 6x36 FXII, walnut stock. Seems to work pretty damn well. I wanted a "big" calibre, but something that was good to 300m and didn't knock the hell out of a guy. 375 H&H was it. It gets used for everything but gophers.

The 375 250gr Sierra BT's are real elk crunchers. It is much tougher that expected. Can be driven at 2900 to 3000. Actually the 375 is a big 270 not a 30/06 (JOKING but true).
I have shot a few rockchucks with it and it is something to behold. It tears the chucks into hunks with the pieces about 30 feet apart.

Practice a lot with both the Hornady and Speer 270's. I think I'll stay with same for elk this year.

I shot a cow elk with my 375 H&H the year before I took the gun to Africa (just felt better taking an "experienced" gun.) 235 gr Barnes with mv of about 2900 fps did a number on her, as one would expect.

I like that, might steal that quote from you! ".........It is primarily a rifle for thin-skinned game, dangerous and non-dangerous.And for that stuff it has no rival. It is a big high velocity rifle,a super 30/06,an ultra 270. With its' heavy bullets, its' flat trajectory, its' high velocity, its' enormous power,it is in a class by itself......." Haven't you guys ever read Jack O'Connor? "The Wonderful 375 Magnum".The Rifle Book;1970.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

I just picked up a left hand model 70 in .375. I am thinking of making it my elk rifle this year rather than my .338,but boy this thing is heavy!

What a great thread. I owned a Ruger #1 in 375 H&H for a while, and shot a mule deer with it. Like everybody says, minimal meat damage and dead on his feet. Or rather, all 4 feet in the air without taking a step.
I recently bought another, and put in for a cow elk tag that I hope to fill with it. This one is on the heavy side at 9.8#, a Caprivi with a Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32, but that will help when I take it up for prairie dogs in a week. Is the Sierra 250gr SPBT enough bullet for P dogs?

According to my buddy Rick, yeah, the .375 will work for p-dogs with that bullet. If you wait 'til they are broadside, you'll almost always get complete penetration so you have a good blood trail.
Best o luck!

After reading this I am getting the idea that I might have to dust off my 375 M70 this fall if I can't get my 338 shooting right. I have shot whitetails with it with good results.

Dang, Logcutter, youre more of a man than I am toting an extra couple pounds around on my shoulder all day isnt an option Id choose lightly. Logcutter is more of a man than a lot of us - big, barrel-chested, and strong as an ox. You definitely want him on your side.

Getting in shape for hunting isn't just about cardio. I always seem to get cramps in my fingers when skinning game and I just haven't found the exercise for it yet.
hang a old judo gi or towel over your pullup bar to do your pullups
