I've been thinking about a heavy barreled 308. I see this SPS comes with a 26 inch barrel which I'd like to cut to 20 inches or so to have a handier rifle but still have the heavier barrel which i hope will enhance accuracy. Anyone have experience with the SPS varmint? Who makes the stock for Rem. and are they any more accurate than a sporter weight rifle? Weight is not an issue as it would be a stand hunting rig for deer.

I have a SPS sporter that shoots as good as my PSS and LTR. Trigger job, bed it, load up some 165's and spend some time with her. I like the shorter bbl'ed stuff. Try some Hornady Interlocks with some IMR4895. It'll shine with the best of them.

jd-one of the distributors made a smallish run of the SPS varm 308 with a 20" tube. I really liked how it felt.
Here's my thought on your project, cut it to 23" and give it a go for a while. And then if you still want it shorter cut it to 21".
Best of luck to ya and I really like the way you're thinking here.

If you want a 20" Heavy barreled .308 Remington, just buy the "Tactical" model. It comes with the same diameter barrel as the Varmint, only 20" long, and has a slightly better pillar bedded Hogue stock.
I do agree with the idea of cutting the Varmints 26" barrel to @ 22"!!

I have the same rifle in .223 and it is very muzzle heavy and no fun to carry around. I have never considered trimming the barrel. What would a a good gun smith charge to cut and recrown it? I'm thinking about 21" would be perfect. What do you guys think?
