Does anyone have a picture of an 1899 A2 or A2 special with a checkered straight grip as shown in Murray 3rd edition page 5-14 (bottom rifle)? I have never seen an 1899 A2 either in round or octagon and was wondering how scarce they are in the US. Would they have been varnished or oil finished? BillR
Attached is a photo of an A2 Carbine (1911) that I have on my hard drive. I think the A2 is a lot different than the other Savage patterns and no too common.

I have a picture of mine I could email you. Wood is varnished. I don't know that I'd drag me balls through any glass for that there refinished rifle though
Thanks for the photo of the A2 Special Carbine. I saw a savage 1899 that I believe may be an original A2 octagon barrelled rifle in 30-30 with a Lyman windage tang sight. Checkering looked to be original and stock was definitely varnished not oiled. It was a very pretty rifle and I am trying to acquire it for my collection. BillR
Nice! What is the barrel style? I have a 103 on a 53 Winchester (sorry guy's ) but have yet to see one for the 99.

Does anyone have a photo of the Lyman 103 micrometer sight? Have purchased the 1899 30-30 octagon barrel with straight grip and checkering. sent for letter hoping it verifies as a regular grade A2 rifle as per Murray 3rd edition 5-18. Rifle has all matching numbers and is in very good condition. Sent for factory letter. Waiting patiently! BillR
It appears that there are still somethings one can not pass up. Actually I bought the rifle complete with Lyman windage tang sight at a price that would be deemed an excellent investment. Anyway .... daughter doesn't start college until September. BillR
Rick, forgot to say brl. is round. Lyman 103 is the only one I have ever encountered for a 99. Rifle about new condition in and out so I am afraid to shoot it !!!!
Jed it is the only early 99 I own, my others are "high number" rifles. I like the A2 because it is not overfancy. The high art 1899s with ornate checkering and carving and slathered over with game scene engraving do not charm my "aesthetic sensibilities" !!! But they do bring big money.
