This has been bugging me all day...Not sure what to do.
It's the same theme as "tominboise's" thread but didn't want to hijack it....
A couple years ago my home was broken into and a couple guns were stolen. I filed the police reports and just wrote them off as gone forever. Oh well...Lesson learned..
But just today I recieved a call from the Police Dep. saying they had recovered one of my two gun's. "Right On!!!" I said.. Then they proceeded to tell me how they had aquired it.... Here's the short story even shorter...Some sorry soul "offed" himself with it. And that I can come and pick it up...And that I will probably need to have it cleaned. Cleaned??? HUH??? I know it wasn't my poor gun's fault that this happened, but not sure that I want it anymore. Would you keep it, sell it, notch the handle....What would you do? I'm serious here.....

I'd take it back, then see how I felt after it was all polished up again.

I was planning on picking it up, just can't decide on keeping it or not. I've wanted my guns back since the day they were stolen. But this doesn't sit right......It's a strange dilemma for sure and has caught me completely off-guard.... Thanks

After a scenario like that, I'd let them have it. To me, it would just be strange to have it again after knowing what happened with it. Plus that you would have to clean it. No, thanks!

Well If you don't want it and it wasn't so far -------
Man, an acquaintance of mine used one of my handloads to blow his brains out. I didn't stop handloading.
I was glad to know that a reversed HB wadcutter and 3.2 grains of Bullseye work.
But then I have been accused of being insensitive.

Hey, the gun is an inaminate object and had no choice in how it was used. I would take it back, clean/refinish as necessary and be glad it was once again in my safe! What the hell does anothers stupid actions have to do with it?

Good Karma for you all around.
Your property was stolen, your gun shot the bad guy and killed him, you were not bothered with the paper work or legal hassels that would have resulted from you doing same while holding the gun.
I would say that gun is definately a keeper.

It would instantly become my favorite gun.

Sounds to me your gun was just acting in self defense and trying to find it's way back home.

Be happy your getting it back, use it and enjoy it. I've seen to many go back to the insurance company, for they are the owner after a settlement is paid.

Get it back immediately.
Scratch one notch in the stock and clean up the rest.
It served it purpose, and that guy won't need it anymore.
See if you can file charges! Emotional stress or something! I'd go for 2 million right out of the gate. It's the American way, don't ya know.

If it's yours to pick up free and clear without subrogation to the insurance company, I'd get it, clean it, sell it.
The fact that your asking and the fashion with which you frame your post tells me you would not be comfortable with retaining the gun. Possibly if it has deep sentimental value, such as a relative passing it to you, that uneasiness might change, and you should consider that. If it was just a gun you had and previously enjoyed, I would move it on and get something else you will enjoy just as much without the issues of the history this one now carries with it. Good luck!

I'm with Big Stick on this one. I have had a firearm stolen before and it causes some serious rage. If the dude that ousted himself was the same guy that stole the gun, I'd be pleased as punch. Like Stick said it would be my new favorite.

I had a guy try to steal one of my horses at a Team roping one time. My mare kicked the crap out of him, and I'll never sell her for it. She's far and away my favorite.
I'd view the gun in the same light. Poetic justice for the dirtbag who stole it.
Hell, you may just want to leave it uncleaned as a warning for anyone else who would want to steal one of your guns.

Not exactly the same but I had a rifle at a gunsmith, that I had to get the law involved to get back. Still missing a Leupold scope, etc. but I got the rifle back. NEVER used it because every time I picked it up, I got mad about the gunsmith. Sold it to a friend who has had it for a year and I can now borrow it and not think about the bad. Actually did that for a week during deer season. Felt great to have the gun back. As I told him, my friend took the stink off of it. If you really like the gun, loan it to a friend for a year or two and I bet when you get it back, it will be an old friend again. JMHO TM
Some mornings, it just does not feel worth it to chew through the straps!~

I suggest you clean it up nice and pretty, take it out and shoot it a few rounds and then, if you still have qualms about keeping it, clean it again and sell it at the local gun show.
