Have owned a 224 WM, two 257 WM's and a 340 WM. All in MK V's
Also owned a MK V Ultra light in .280 Rem.
I get this trading urge all to often! I'm an incureable "gun loonie"
If I was to get another it would be another 257, and I just might!

In my case, I already have M700s in .257 and .300, so for me, I would say a .340.
This is a shooting forum, there is no place here for logic.

I would vote for the .300 Wby.
For me, the Wby. 'Big Three' are:
.257 Wby. .300 Wby. .416 Wby.
With those three, you can truly hunt the world!

I'd get a 340WBY or a 375WBY. I'm not much of a fan of WBY rifles but I do really like the cartridges. My 700 in .257WBY is a keeper for sure. I'll probably build a 375wby eventually.

I have had a Weatherby Mark V ALASKAN in 270 Win.(traded) A Weatherby Mark V Accumark 30-378 (traded) A Weatherby Mark V Ultra lt wt in 270 Win.(stolen) My once in a lifetime Mark V ultra lt wt 338-06 (stolen) Weatherby Mark V Stainless 30-378 (stolen) I have a Weatherby Custom Shop Mark V stainless in 270 Wby mag my wife had made for my b-day a few years ago. All stainless , less than 7 lbs, will put 3 factory 130 gr. bullets running 3450 fps into 1/2 in.@ 100 yds. This to me is Perfection. AMRA

I've owned two Mark V's. One was a German .270 Wby and the other a Japanese made .300. The .300 was the most accurate and shot the original 165 Barnes X bullet better than any other. I've sold both but built a custom .270 Wby on a Remington action. I like the .270 better than the .300 since the recoil is considerably less and I can't think of too many hunting situations where the .270 wouldn't work about as well as the .300. Anymore I'm thinking if I need more horsepower than the .270 Wby I also need a bigger bullet.

I have a .300WBY in a wood stocked Vanguard and a .270WBY in a Ruger #1. I like both of them, but if I had a .257, I believe that I would go with a .300. I have a friend that farms and he has had a pre 64 Mod 70 Win in .300WBY for maybe 50yrs. It has killed lots and lots of coyotes. He uses it for everything from groundhogs to elk. Good luck.

a .300 wby in a mark 5 is generally an accurate, hard hitting and shootable combination...
it'd be my choice of the bunch....

Well, I would go with a 7mm Weatherby Mag, if I was so inclined. A MK-V in a wood handle would do it for me. But when it gets right down to it, Roy's 300 is by far the most popular on in the line up and for good reason.

For me the Mark V is a big action. Bigger than I want for any Wby cartridge smaller (shorter) than the 300. I would go with a 300 or a 340. I ran a 300Wby chambered rifle for several years as my only hunting rifle; it is a magnificent cartridge.
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

The 340's another winner in the Weatherby lineup. To me the "Big Three" are the 257, 300 and 340. That's why I have two of each Jorge, I hear they call that 'redundancy' in the aviation world. grin

I can live with out all of them. Just like somebody who's never "been" with Jessica Simpson I guess. You can't miss it if you can't have it...jorge

Per the original post
If you dont want a 257 which I cant understand why you wouldnt but anyway I think the only option is the 270 one very under rated round

No one's asked it, yet... What are you planning to hunt? The .257 is somewhat light for elk, the .340 is kinda heavy for antelope. All around... the .300. Factory loadings down to 150 gr (.270 range) and up to 220 gr (.340 range). Handload from around 100 to 240 for long-range p-dogs all through up-close b-bears. Can't really get much more versatile than that!
Have fun, whatever you choose.
