First post here, been reading them for a while. Is there a time frame where the Airline rates drop? Seems the Delta non stop from Atlanta to JoTown,SA is at $1700 right now, with no discounters offering less. I have a PG hunts booked for May 2011. Plenty of time to find the right window. Thanks for any help. Carl

They usually drop after the safari season. Like it or not, hunting season is the peak travel time for Southern Africa.

Bummer, I have heard to buy tickets when they drop to $1200-$1400. Was hoping that would happen for my flight. Can't book anything more than 11 months ahead, so I was not to late on that reguard.

$1700 isn't too bad, we paid almost $2100 in July of 2008.

I was doing some hypothetical purchases for my June 2011 hunt with Delta and prices were $1632.00 with a 11 hour delay over in Paris. ??
34 hour total travel time? What is your total travel time from your Home airport to Johannesburg ? Man, I'm not looking forward to the travel part.

What part of the U.S. are starting out from?
What part of RSA are you hunting?
Emirates is a little under $1500 per person right now but you have to route through UAE. Not too big a deal, IMO, it's about a three hour lay-over. They also fly to Cape Town and Durban so it might be easier for you depending on where your outfitter is located.
Do a little research on connecting through Europe somewhere. This can help break up the trip and you could find some lower fares. If I were you, I'd try and avoid Jo-burg at all costs but I understand that this isn't always possible.

It may be a challenge to get something cheaper.
I check prices out of JFK (SAA) from time to time and usually flights for Sept. and Oct. drop a bit.Kinda surprised this year that they have stayed in the $1200-1400 range. But they have kept that thru early next year. The last few years prices have dropped below $1000 by a bit(thats JFK to Joh'burg with a refuel in Dakar; 17 hrs +/-)

Jensen, I am going in August. Limpopo and Free State for a Plains Game hunt. I bought the ticket in Feb. United from Sacramento to Washington DC and SA airlines to Johannesburg with a 1 hr stop in Dakar. Best I could do at the time was $1700. Add another $130 for travel insurance. Not looking forward to the 18 hour leg from Washington. Phil

Man, I'm not looking forward to the travel part. ============ I've had to do the same for my June 2011 hunt as Gracy Travel has me on purchase hold for another 3 weeks or so. I have to break up the trip so we're doing a overnight layover in Europe to acclimate and will then fly into SA the next evening. On the way home, we're staying in Rome for 4 days.

Do you suppose that they eliminated it and made it direct to J'Burg or just not mentioned because it is only re-fueling????????

You are correct, that flight always stops in Dakar for fuel, catering, and change flight crew. Can't make JOH with the Airbus from there, too far. You don't get off the plane there, just those that have that as a destination. You'll leave from terminal #4.....easy to negotiate.
