Will a winchester 38-40 shoot any other cartridge , such as a .38, .38 Special, or .357? Thanks James

Nope. Nothin' but the real deal will do.
Plenty of factory 38-40 Win. (aka 38 WCF) ammo still available, if somewhat pricey.
If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.

The 38-40 is one of those rare cartridges where the numbers describing the cartridge are wrong. You would think that 38-40 would mean 38 caliber with 40 grains of BP. But that is wrong. The caliber of the 38-40 is actually the same as the 40 S&W and 10 mm. The caliber is .401. This makes no sense, but it is the way it is. So no, the other cartridges will not work properly in the 38-40. Tom.
