Not to crazy about checkering, but the rifle is in great shape and the price is right. This is not marked XTR. Did the "regular" 9422M's come checkered with a designated model name?
Edit: I found out the later models were checkered.

Some were checkered and some were not. No model difference that I know of. However there were other different models available. I have had some with checkering, and some without. Tom.

Sako,
The Checkering on the 9422 rifles started in 1979/80.
The very first "XTR" (which stands for "xtra finish) m9422s had the glossier blue and wood finish (a la Browing) but no checkering.
Later, in the early 1990s the "XTR" marking was dropped. The stocks were still checkered but carried a matte finish.

Thanks. The checkered model that I am getting is a late 80's gun. I believe it is a satin finish. I am also getting a '73 model, no checkering of course. Thinking I will prefer the model without checkering.

I kept the two non-checkered ('73 & '74) rifles and sold the checkered one in this picture. Just put a '67 Marlin Mountie on layaway today.

FWIW, I believe the later, satin-finished, checkered gun is a 9422 Legacy - and as such should have a rubber bumper ILO the hard/plastic BP issued on the earlier checkered & non-checkered XTR's.

It ain't no fun, when the rabbit's got the gun

9422 Legacy was a 22 inch barrel pistol grip gun.
If you really like something, you better buy two!
