Just picked up a nice little Ruger in .260....let me here your opinion and experience with this rifle for white tail etc. I hunt "thicker" woods so hopefully this round will "fit". Thanks, jc

It works for me. I've run a 700MR for about 12 years or so. I also have a 77 MKII W/22" that is very accurate with 130AB and RL19 if that helps. IMO the 260 is what a WT cartridge should be.

There is no accounting for taste.

Experience is a great thing as long as one survives it.

Generally, there ain't a lot that separates the two however,
Barely making it is a whole lot more satisfying than barely not making it.

I've owned a Sako in .260Rem for about 12 months now, I have to say i am very pleased with it. For Whitetail/Fallow sized deer, at sane distances, it seems to be about perfect...

Shoot your deer through the lungs with almost any .264" bullet in the 100 to 140 grain range and you'll be eating venison.

I like the 100 grain Partition, as it offers a nice balance of accuracy, penetration, and velocity. That said, I have shoot around 50 whitetails with the 95 grain VMax, 100 grain BT & Partition, 120 grain BT, 125 grain Partition, 129 grain Hornady SpirePoint, 140 grain Core-Lokt, and 140 grain Partition. If you think that you need more bullet weight, the 129 grain SpirePoint and 140 grain Partition are good choices, but on whitetails the 100 grain Partition will shoot through-through when you shoot 'em through the pleural cavity.

Remember to wear ear protection with your likely to be loud 16.5" barrel Ruger!

You might also consider buying a McM Edge stock from Rick while they're on sale.

I took 2 bucks last season with the top one, all 3 are .260's. The first was at 60yds and the second was at 300yds, both were using the corbon 120gr TSX and neither took a step. Bottom gun is the Ruger I just picked up but I haven't shot it yet. LOVE this caliber.

I would say the .260 will work. I've promised myself to put mine in the woods more this year. It's hard getting away from the "old friends" in the safe and trying new things. I can't imagine the 120 TSX not working.

The .260 is a great round. It will suffice for about 90+% of hunting needs in NA imo. With the right twist it will handle bullets from 90-160g and take everything from varmints to moose. Mine is a Ruger M77 boat paddle. I have killed 15-20 whitetails and a few coyotes with it and it was never wanting. I shoot the Hornady 129g spirepoints over RL19 primarily. PH

...................The 260 Remy, is about as an ideal WT round as you can have, whether hunting in thicker woods or in the open country. Looks like if I`m reading you correctly, you just got a 16.5" barreled Ruger compact?

If so, and from lots of hunting experience with my own 16.5" tubed Ruger Frontier, I can tell you that you`ll soon fall very much "in like" using this rifle when hunting in brush, in the woods, from tight quartered stands, when carrying it around in various terrain conditions, for great manuverability and handling, as a truck gun, shouldering speed and so on. Ideal user-friendly rifle dimension for anything!

It will be louder, but really not that much more than if you were shooting a 260 from a 20" barrel. Regardless, you should be wearing some good hearing protection in the field anyway. Then for noise, the barrel`s length won`t matter.

As a little tip, if you ever need a longer LOP for comfort depending on your clothing, get a slip on recoil pad, which in a few seconds can increase the LOP by 1" up to 13.5" ........I use the Limbsaver slip-on.

If you ever get a 300-350 yard shot opportunity on a WT in open country, feel free to indulge and not be detered. Even with that short of a barrel, that rifle is extremely capable.

Have fun and enjoy your new `lil toy!

Ear protection in the field and slip on recoil pads.

For a .260.

Can only shake my head at times...

I have had a couple. Very nice cartridge. Sold one, and girlfriend took the other. Only reason I don't have one now is I generally use my CZ 550 in 6.5x55. Pretty much identical in performance to the 260. I just like my CZ better. I've used Hornady 129gr SPT's and they have never failed me.

I may work up a load with 100-120gr Noslers or something for an antelope hunt in the future.

............The best Walker`s Hi-Def Digital Game Ears are very good! But not cheap!!!!

You`ll get increased hearing by several times, while having around 29-30 dcbl noise protection at the same time.

My hearing is still 100% using the Walkers in the field hunting with my 300 WSM Ruger Frontier. Just a "tad" louder than your 260......... grin

huh?

Democracy is not freedom. Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to eat for lunch. Freedom comes from the recognition of certain rights which may not be taken, not even by a 99% vote.

someone needing a slip-on recoil pad and $400 game ears to make something all ready perfectly capable, work at killing deer.

It has something to do with the fact that he's from California, I'm sure.

You've seen them around Bozeman, I'm sure laugh
