It was rough, seen quite a bit of use. No big gouges but it did have some dings and dents.

I have a .243 UL that will soon become a .257 Roberts, and I will have Karnis do the same. It is a little rougher then this one.

My .257 Roberts UL is nice to carry around but I have never been able to get consistent groups under 1.5 inches with it and mostly about 2MOA or so. It kills deer thoough, in the head and spine. It just does not like targets. I have its heavier brother and same poor accuracy. I am ready to sell them both.

My 280 MkII and 7x57 tang safety shoot good after floating the bbls. I have too many other accurate small bores and am tired of accurizing Rugers and it may not work with the 25 cals.

Have not shot one of the new ones. The first one I shot was in .308 in the original M77. I liked it so much I bought the exact same rifle for my self. It was my only rifle for about three seasons until it was stolen. I had started a Mauser project by then and shifted the caliber and set up to .308. The rest is history. I did not need another one, but, I miss it a lot.

A ruger SA lightweight in .243, .260, 7/08, or .308 would be a great choice, but the old ones had longer barrels. I am not too keen on higher pressure hunting rifles with short tubes. They are handy but they are really noisy! I have lost too much hearing already. 2 cents.

If you get the time, could you post a full-length photo? For several years I've thought a Ruger UL re-barreled in 7x57 would be a fast way to get into a slick, classy little rifle, but I've wondered how the longer barrel looks with the shorter UL stock. The Ruger UL is visually balanced in factory form, though it seems muzzle light in the hands.

I'm feeling the same way after having that experience with several Rugers. My present 257 will probably be my last. I don't think the problem is particular to 25s but I do think it's hit or miss based on my experience with four different Rugers.

Will try and get one this weekend. It is IMO much more appealing with the 22 or 23" barrel. I have a factory .30-06 and though I like it I would prefer a slightly longer barrel.

My .257R will have a Douglas XX, #1 at 22"

I'm not sure what is available today in "stock options" but in .308 and 6.25 lbs out of the box, there are certainly worse options out there.

Pard has been running one for years in Maine and has taken several nice bucks. I think the Hawkeye version is a winner and is probably next on my list. Have yet to hear disappointment with regards to shooting.
