I always liked the looks and action of the Mauser. The mil surplus ones have a strong action. My goal is to build a deer/elk rig off a K98 action. Who has built one form the action or had one built by a gunsmith. Post some pictures of your rifle. Thanks

I did not build it nor have it built, 7x61Sharpe & Hart. It is currently, being restocked by our very own Karnis! It is coming along very nicely! Here it is when I got it, this was put together in the mid-60's.

That stock is fabulous. Great art.
Select a rifle hunting cartridge that is "Enough Gun" and not one designed to just wound the enemy!

The military mausers that I have seen are not all that good a deal. Of course some have been worked over by skilled smiths. Even then I will take an old M70 over a mauser anyday and I have! I have a mauser 'custom' with a fine walnut stock that someone else must have spent a fortune on. Overall they are not worth it to me. If you must have a mauser get a commercial one. Here is one worked by the old smith Floyd Butler. If I still wanted heavy rifles I would buy it. Floyd Butler rifle

Steelhead- I like the fn98 30-06. The 257 is also nice. I love mausers. If i built one from the action up. I would chamber it in 270 winchester. You have nice rifles everyone. I am truly jealous.

Here's a pic of the stock so far. Forend is about 80% shaped on to the grip, cheekpiece, etc. It will be an improvement on the existing, ahem, stock. Told Sactoller that he needs to get rid of the 1x scope but he refuses: Blank: After making a few wood chips. I'll post additional pics next week.

Here's two. Front is a 1909 Argentine, Mark X bottom metal, re-contoured, Timney trigger, Douglas barrel, Dakota M-70 type safety, jewelled bolt & follower, 280 Rem. Back is a Spandau, re-contoured bottom metal, Timney trigger, Douglas barrel, Dakota M-70 type safety, jewelled bolt follower, 25-06 Rem. Both guns have Rimrock stocks. MM

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

No matter how you do it, building a custom rifle around a military Mauser action will end up costing your more $$, more time, and more aggrivation than if you just buy a commercial rifle or build around a Rem/Rug/Win commercial action.
For me, building a custom rifle on a military Mauser action is a fun project, but never cost effective. If you feel strongly about a Mauser action, the 98 Husqvarnas that were built by FN in the late 1940 thru early/mid 1950s seem to be a pretty good buy these days. Much nicer actions, fit and finish wise, then any Interarms Mark X or more recent Yugoslav Mauser actions that I've seen.

Jeff I said it is a goal of mine. Maybe when I retire. Plenty of time to design my rifle. Till then I will use my 30-06 semi auto. I always wanted to build a rifle off a mauser. Too much money and time for me though.

I'm retired, more or less, so I have time to put together several rifles every year and usually 1 is built on a military Mauser action of some sort. The last couple have been built on 1942/3 vintage M38 Swedish small-rings and 1908 Brazilian large-rings.
If this is a long term project, you could put together a parts list and start buying those parts and squirreling them away for the day when you start your build. I'd still suggest going with a commmercial Mauser action in lieu of a military action, but its your rifle, not mine.

The commercial actions are better than the mil surplus. The military actions tend to stick a bit and the extractor is rough. Thanks for the advice 260remguy.

Why would you put a Sako extractor on any 98 Mauser bolt?
