Subject line says it all: Thoughts on today's bullets, especially lead free for a retro 1 in 14 twist?
Searching all I could find was a mention that the Barnes 55 grain TSX worked well in a .223 Sako of unknown but likely 1/12 twist. Similarly from earliest days the best word on a slow twist .244 has been try it YMMV and I suppose that's true of a high speed 1/14 twist in a good barrel and action - at least without getting into the silly with some of the long range VLD bullets in .224.
I'm recreating one that got away with elements of what I really wanted at the time so I have a nice 26" very heavy barrel Swift with a fixed 16X Leupold from 1977 and a 1/14 twist. With classic cup and core bullets I know I'll have the performance I expect but what about a lead free future?

I have been trying to get the 53-grain TSX to shoot consistently in a 1-14 twist Swift for a few weeks now, and eventually gave up. I pushed it as hard as I dared, around 3950 fps, and while it would shoot pretty well on some days, a day or two later it wouldn't.
Now, my Swuft only has a 24" barrel and maybe another two inches of potential velocity would help.

Barnes shows both 50 and 45 grain TSX .224" bullets on their website.
I think that either of those might work.
I have never heard of anyone getting the stellar acccuracy from the 53g or heavier slugs in a 1-14" twist. Sometimes it is not even possible with a 1-12' in a smaller case like the .223...

Yeah, it says right on the 53-grain's box that a 1-12" twist is requires. But I had a box on hand, and have had good luck getting some bullets to shoot in marginal twists, so decided to give it a try.

In cases like this my reasoning has always been, "try it" better to know for sure than to wonder what might have been. Especially when you have a cartridge that will push them to very high velocity.
