I've got a Ruger chambered for a .257 Roberts, so I'd go with the Sav 99 chambered chamered for a .300 Sav. The last year I could have bought a '99 chamered for a .300 Sav. for $650. Ammo for either is pretty a reloading job.

Buy the Roberts. You can hunt varmints up to elk with the Bob.

If the Bob was in anything but a Ruger, I would go with it, but I had a Bob in a Ruger and it was the sorriest rifle I ever had the misfortune to own. Despite feeding it every load ever known to the mind of man, recrowning, bedding (twice) two scopes, etc, I was lucky to get a 4" group out of it and most of the time could not hit a hat adt 100 yards. Took it to the gunshow and got rid of it. Dang shame too, pretty little rifle. Now have a Remington 722 and am a happy camper. The Savage would be a fine rifle for your nephew, or for you for that matter.

I got my son a 77 in 257 Bob many years ago and later had Bob Dunlap re-chamber it to 257 A.I. The kid still uses it for everything. I also have a 99 in 300 Svg and have a lot of respect for the round. It is my wife's deer rifle now.

Savage 99. A. The classiest lever rifle ever made - the Bently of it's day. B. The best, most well balanced deer cartridge out there. Both the 99 and the .300 are historically significant, and better represent a lifelong gift. Can't get a new one!

No deer fell to Roberts, but a couple to a .25-06, and a few to a .300 Savage. I would vote Savage, unless a lot of varmints are in the plan.

I lean toward the 300 Savage, but the 257 will get it done as well. 257 is a more all around caliber, the 300 is a deer and up loading.

300SAV. That goes double if it's a Savage model 99.
Plus, to my mind the bob's main advantage wouldn't be so accessible to a new hunter, anyway.

Good morning, I put together a Roberts AI some 30 years ago, it is a beaut, reliable old favourite that serves me well to this day. I have hunted 100's of goats with it and it kills like the Wrath of God! I can't speak for the Savage as they are not plentiful here in Australia so don't know it. Considering the wide range of bullet weights available for the Roberts, it is a super flexible calibre with VERY mild recoil, I started my son off with it and he'll steal it from me every time we go away together Bravo 27 From a friend Down Under REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMETHING - 500 YARDS!

A cut and dried case of, both.
The Roberts would handle plinking to big game, and makes a wicked varmint rifle. The Savage cartridge just performs - well above what it should.

I have both. The .257 is in the Ruger 77, but my .300 Savage is a Remington 760 built in 1952. I would go with the .300, although both are fine rifles. Al
