I would like to know what samll game you like to hunt. This is another good way to get this board running. I like to hunt squirrels a lot, but I rabbit hunt with dad too. Of course that is another time I carry a shotgun. Rabbit hunting is pretty fun with a good dog. I do prefer hunting squirrels though.
P.S. Please feel free to post new topics for the good of the board.

I love hunting jackrabbits in the off-season with a .22 semi-auto. Took the hint from Jack O'Connor, though he espoused using your bolt hunting rifle.
The first rifle my Dad ever bought me was a Weatherby Mark XXII, which functions both as a single shot and as a semi auto. Still have it.
Wanna get ready for deer hunting in the cottonwoods or anywhere where jump shooting is likely, try jacks with a .22.
Nothing like blam-blam-blamming after a jack. Now, once I get my Springer steadied, THEN we might really make a day out of it. Course, his name is ... Jack. [Linked Image]
Rick

Squirrels have been my primary small game, but haven't done so in a few years. Also done ptarmigan, geese, ducks, rabbits. ~~~Suluuq

Mostly cottontail, jacks and ground squirrel. We are fortunate enough to be able to hunt all 3 all year so there is never an excuse for not getting out.

Squirrels and rabbits, mostly. Michigan has snowshoe rabbits in winter but frankly the snow's too deep to trudge after them most years. What was fun as a kid is not fun when you're fifty-something. Cottontail and squirrel are early-fall fun and red squirrel is all year long. And you can always scout for deer sign along the way.
Talker

Love hunting wabbits! Nothing quite like gettin up early, gettin out of a bluff early in the morning, watching the sunrise, listening to the wind, and then opening a can of whipa@# on the bunnies! Back at home by noon, firing up the BBQ. I's likes mine fried, BBQ'd, teriyaki'd,.... [Linked Image] ~MarinePMI

I mainly hunt ruffed grouse, but also red squirrels. Sadly we have very few of the eastern gray squirrels up here. If you want to call it hunting, I also kill the porqupines I find.

Hunting gray and fox squirrels with a .22 was a favorite activity when I lived a bit farther south. They are hard to find in these parts, though, due to the scarcity of oak trees. I do hunt cottontails and snowshoe bunnies now and then, but ruffed grouse is the big draw here. We are generally blessed with pretty good numbers of them, and they are easily my favorite small game target, along with woodcock. They both seem to have the uncanny knack for taking flight just as I kneel to get a closer look at .... whatever! Life is good in October.

In order of preference, doves, squirrels, & rabbits. I would probably rabbit hunt more than I do, but both my dogs have gotten too old now to be hunted either often or for extended periods.

I love to hunt squirrels with my Marlin 880SQ I just put a new Simmons 4-12X40mm scope w/target turrets on it, its a little excessive on the magnification to some people but I just love it I cant wait to take it out start popin the rats out of the trees

I guess I like to hunt just about anything, although I require that I have a use for the animal. I don't hunt ONLY for pleasure, but I have to admit that's the bigger part of it. It's all about the challenge and a chance to get outdoors.

I don't care to shoot and just leave them lay, of course excepting pests and other such nasty varmits :-)

I think I'd have to vote for rabbits and squirrels as far as something to eat. In the varmit category, we get prairie dogs, jack rabbits and as a side line opportunist to just being out in the Nat. Forrests-- coyotes.
There's lots of marmots out here too. Up in the mountains they get a great coat and one day when I get the equipment to tan, I'll try one of them and a badger too! But I can't bring myself to kill something unless I have a use for it. Except as was said above, the pests.

Squirrels, brush bunnies for the pot and Jack Rabbits for fun. I like to use either one of my .22's or one of my air rifles. Sure makes a good day out of a bad one. Lawdog

Dang, old thread! I like hunting rabbits in the winter. Same goes for ptarmigan and spruce hen. Though, rabbit population seemed a bit down last year, so I didn't go much. I hope that will change this year. Rabbits are fun to blast with a scoped .22 rimfire.
